The Joy E. Mahachek Fund was originally created to provide funds for those appropriate expenses in the Mathematics Department which were not covered by university funds. These expenses were usually student oriented. Examples of such expenses are: travel expenses for students to attend professional meetings; student social events such as Fall Semester Pizza Party to welcome new freshmen; purchase books and other educational material for student reading room use; expense of refreshments for seminars and colloquia for students and faculty; etc. This fund can also be used for expenses in the Mathematics Department which are not covered by university funds when the expenses are not student oriented as long as the payment of such expenses are approved by the Steering Committee of the Mathematics Department. Such a policy allows for the flexible use of this fund.
