IUP will host a 15-year anniversary remembrance program September 11, 2016, between 8:30 a.m. and noon to reflect on the 2001 attacks on the United States. A tent will be set up in the Oak Grove with a display honoring the three IUP alumni lost in the fall of the World Trade Center. Music will be presented by student members of the IUP Wind Ensemble between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m.

IUP will begin the fall semester with a Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement, accomplished in great part through a reorganization of several units within the Student Affairs division. The center will eventually make its home in a $2.7-million renovated space on the first floor of Elkin Hall.

Erika Fenstermacher, a junior psychology major with a sociology minor and a concentration in gerontology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has been appointed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf as the student trustee on the IUP Council of Trustees. Her appointment was finalized on March 17, 2016. She will serve in the role of student trustee until her graduation in 2017.
The President’s Medal of Distinction is the highest nondegree award the university presents. It was established in 1985 to honor citizens of the state and region whose professional achievement or public service is of national significance or special significance to the university.

Symposium events are free and open to the community. The keynote speaker is Peggy McIntosh, anti-racism activist; associate director of the Wellesley Centers for Women; speaker, founder, and codirector of the National SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Project on Inclusive Curriculum; and author of the 1989 essay “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack.”

President Michael Driscoll has authored a chapter in a monograph coordinated by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Grants Resource Center. The monograph is titled “Stewards of Place: Implementing Regional Engagement and Economic Development Strategies.” Driscoll’s chapter, “Regional Engagement: A President’s Perspective,” offers advice on how to move institutions forward in leading economic, workforce, community, and social development.
