During the life of the project, budget revisions may be necessary. The terms and conditions of the award frequently include additional instructions on allowable costs. Some projects require the sponsor's prior approval before purchasing certain items or require prior approval for expenditures outside of the terms and conditions of the award: for example; issuing subcontracts, purchasing capital equipment, authorizing foreign travel, and re-budgeting.

There are many considerations in determining if a project can be re-budgeted. University policies and departmental needs must be considered. Agency or sponsor regulations are the determining factor if re-budgeting is permitted on the award, and if so, within what parameters.

The Post-Award Grant and Contract Specialist (GCS), in consultation with grant accountants, is available to assist you with any re-budgeting needs and will communicate with the funding agency when applicable.
