Effective June 5, 2025, Paul Miller’s Law, also known as the Hands-free Law, will officially take effect across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This essential new legislation aims to protect all road users by significantly reducing distracted driving, which is a leading cause of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Dennis Popovec, a 1977 business and accounting graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, originally from Westmoreland County, has continued his support to IUP through the Popovec Outstanding Student Athlete Scholarship.

An Indiana University of Pennsylvania alumni couple from Mechanicsburg who had life-long careers in education has established a scholarship for IUP education majors.
This year’s Summer Bridge Program is for newly admitted undergraduate IUP students whose ALEKS (math) score is below the minimum needed to enroll in their major’s math requirement and who want to improve their math skills over the summer with the goal of saving time and money.
The Department of Language, Literature and Writing held the annual IUP Spring Methodology Conference on Foreign Language Teaching on Friday, April 25, 2025.
On Saturday, March 29, 2025, the Appalachian Professional Language Educators’ Society (APPLES) hosted its annual Foreign Language Festival on the IUP campus. Approximately 160 foreign language students from local area high schools participated.

On May 8, members of Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees heard a presentation about a new dual enrollment program designed to support pathways to high-priority occupations in a health-related field.
On May 8, Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees honored Shagufta Haque for her service on the Council with a resolution of appreciation and the naming of a seat in IUP’s Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in her honor “for extraordinary service as a university citizen and student trustee.”
On May 8, IUP’s Council of Trustees approved a proposal to shift IUP’s Academy of Culinary Arts and the Academy’s Baking and Pastry Arts programs from clock-hour to credit-bearing programs. This approval allows students who successfully complete the Culinary Arts or the Baking and Pastry Arts program to receive an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree.
International student and American Language Institute instructor Alexandra Krasova spoke at commencement and is the recipient of the Graduate Student Outstanding Research Award, the IUP Outstanding Leader Award, the Promising Future Interdisciplinary Researcher Award, and the Teaching Associate Faculty Recognition Award.
Sanda Andrada Maicaneanu recently published three collaborative research papers exploring the environmental and electrochemical applications of natural materials like clays and zeolites, advancing sustainable solutions in water treatment and sensing technologies.
