The GEAR UP program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) made a lasting impact this summer, welcoming 18 high school students in grades 10–12 from the Pottstown and Norristown school districts for a unique and enriching college-preparation experience.
Funded by the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant through the US Department of Education, this initiative is designed to help students from underserved school districts prepare for higher education and ensure their success once they get there.
“This summer’s program was a tremendous success, bringing together students for an engaging and meaningful experience focused on creativity, education, and college preparation,” said Jeremy Risinger, assistant director of Academic and Career Success, who helped coordinate the partnership to bring these two school districts to IUP.
A major highlight of the program was the STEAMSHOP (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), where students explored their artistic and technical skills by designing decals and logos. These hands-on projects encouraged creativity while teaching real-world applications of design and technology.
Beyond STEAM activities, students were introduced to academic fields such as exercise science, sports administration, and sports communication. These sessions provided insight into potential career paths and highlighted how sports, health, and media intersect in education and professional opportunities.
The program’s success was driven by strong collaboration between IUP’s University College and Student Affairs, whose teams worked together to create a welcoming and interactive environment. Students not only engaged in classroom learning but also gained a valuable preview of campus life, giving them a clearer understanding of what to expect in college and what it means to be part of a university community.
“We’re excited to be able to offer programs like GEAR UP at IUP to support high school students and help them prepare for future academic experiences,” said Roger Briscoe II, executive director of Student Inclusion at IUP. “This initiative gives students a meaningful head start on their journey toward higher education.”
The IUP GEAR UP team is proud of the accomplishments made this summer by the students and remains committed to providing opportunities that inspire and prepare students for their future academic journeys.
