Deleting pages, files, and images may cause broken links, or pictures could disappear from pages. But Cascade will show you anything that has a relationship with what you want to delete, so you can update the link before it breaks.

  • Relationship: any asset in Cascade that links to or displays the file or image. Learn more about finding relationships.

Before deleting any page(s), please contact the Digital Team so we can set up redirects for any outside links to the page. Email web-team@iup.edu.

To delete an asset, click ...More > Delete. The Delete confirmation window will appear. It's important that this be looked at, because ignoring it will break links if the deletion completes.

If something is using the item you're trying to delete, a message like this will appear:

Warning notice that assets are still using this asset, with a link for more details

If you're able to edit a related asset, then that must be done first to update or remove the link or image. Only when you’re sure that you won’t break any links is it safe to mark anything for deletion.

Click the More details link to open the Relationships section, and then click once on the dropdown menu to see the assets that are using your item.

Example of relationship details, with folder location appearing during a hoverHovering briefly over, or right-clicking on, the name of an asset will display its folder location. Clicking on the name of the asset will take you to that item so you can update or remove the link or image.

After that is submitted, you can go to the next item in the list, if any. (Using the browser Back button is a quick way to return to the Deletion confirmation window.)

  • If you are not able to edit the asset, please contact the Digital Team before completing the deletion process: web-team@iup.edu

  • If the popup folder path shows Vanity URL, you can ignore it. These are maintained by the Digital Team.

You can check the relationships to any page or file anytime by selecting
    ...More > Relationships.

Only after all relationships are edited and no others appear as an asset warning is it safe to mark the item for deletion.

    Deleting Index Pages

An index page is the main page for its folder. Any additional pages in that folder, or any pages in subfolders, will appear as sublinks in the menu. An index page with any published subpages cannot be deleted. Every folder must have a main (index) page.

    • Exception: If the entire section—all subpages—are to be deleted or otherwise removed from the menu, then it will be safe to delete an index page. In these cases, you should contact the Digital Team after handling any related assets (see above).
