Tell me more about being a music major or minor

We offer undergraduate degrees in education (BS) and performance (BFA) as well as a general music degree (BA) that includes an optional focus on the music industry.

Students interested in pursuing a major or minor in music at IUP will complete an audition or portfolio review prior to beginning studies. You can find out about the process and register for your audition on our auditions page

Tell me how I can get involved with ensembles at IUP

At IUP, students have numerous opportunities to be involved in music through a wide variety of ensembles. Whether you're a music major, minor, or non-major, you can participate in groups like Marching Band, concert bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, orchestras, and more. These ensembles offer a chance to perform in diverse styles, from classical to contemporary, and to collaborate with talented musicians and faculty. Joining an ensemble is a great way to grow as a musician and be part of IUP’s music community.

You may join the IUP University Band or University Chorus without an audition. For all other ensembles, auditions occur during the first week of classes.

We empower IUP music students to RISE: to Reach new heights, to Inspire and be inspired by their community, to grow through Support and mentorship, and to Excel in their pursuits. Our department thrives on progress, connection, and the collaborative spirit that unites us.

REACH

We empower students to reach beyond what they thought possible, exploring unfamiliar musical territories, building essential skills, and expanding into secondary performance areas, music creation, and music industry opportunities.

INSPIRE

Students at IUP are continually inspired by creative collaboration with peers, mentorship from internationally active faculty, and regular opportunities to engage with guest artists through the substantial Edward R. Sims Distinguished Artist Fund.
