Biography
Tim Paul serves as professor of music and director of Band Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and as co-conductor of the Keystone Winds. His work is rooted in a belief that some of the most meaningful musical experiences occur when people come together in pursuit of something greater than themselves—through the shared pursuit of excellence, discovery, and the joy of the process.
At IUP, Prof. Paul leads an active program encompassing performance, conducting, music education, and mentorship. His work with university and community musicians reflects a commitment to developing not only accomplished performers but thoughtful musicians, educators, and leaders. He previously served as associate director of bands at the University of Oregon.
Ensembles under Paul’s leadership have been featured at prominent regional and national conferences and festivals, including events of the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, Northwest NAfME, Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, NAfME Southern Division, Oregon Music Education Association, Tri-State Band Festival, and All-South Music Institute. His professional honors include the Phi Beta Mu Florida Chapter Distinguished Director Award, the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Flag of Honor, and the national UMI/ASBDA Distinguished Young Band Director’s Award.
A passionate advocate for the creation and performance of new music, Paul has commissioned and collaborated with recognized American composers, including Libby Larsen, Frank Ticheli, David Maslanka, Roger Zare, Jess Langston Turner, Carter Pann, Dan Welcher, and Giovanni Santos. He maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and speaker. His scholarship has appeared in the Journal of Band Research, and he is coauthor of Winds and Hymns: Resource Guide to Hymns, Chorales, and Spirituals in Select Wind Band Literature, published by Meredith Music.
In 2014, Paul founded the International Fellowship of Conductors, Composers, and Collaborators (IFC3), creating opportunities for artists to connect through composers’ symposia, performances, lectures, recording projects, and conducting workshops. IFC3 has released five recordings and has fostered collaborations among composers, conductors, and performers dedicated to advancing the wind band medium.
Paul has been an active member of the College Band Directors National Association for more than two decades and has served as president and past president of the CBDNA Northwest Division. His professional service has also included leadership and board positions with Pinnacle Winds, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, the National Association for Music Education, and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.
Throughout his career, Prof. Paul has sought to create spaces where musicians can discover the joy of making music together and where students can experience the possibilities that come from curiosity, commitment, and collaboration. For him, the pursuit of musical excellence is ultimately about people: sharing something meaningful with others, growing together through the process, and creating experiences that remain long after the final note.
