A Literature Review of Academic Makerspaces

What is your research?
My research is proposed to contribute to the efforts of the STEAMSHOP faculty in receiving external funding for a university-wide academic makerspace at IUP. I am working to complete a literature review that focuses on the rural/ urban technology divide, access to technology in universities, and research on how effective engaged learning in promoting the recruitment and retention of a more diverse population of STEM majors at the collegiate level. My review of this research will identify possible opportunities for future research that can be performed by the STEAMSHOP.
Why is it important?
As a future educator, creating a space for collaboration amongst students is significant to me. Alongside Professor Sean Derry, researching makerspaces and their impact on academia, we have the potential opportunity to contribute to a space for students university-wide
