Elephant in the Room: Conversation and Action for Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in the Classroom and Beyond

Come hear the words and music of suffrage-era women: “The March of the
Women” by Ethel Smyth and Emmeline Pankhurst, the words of Susan B.
Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, and Indiana’s own Jane Leonard
and composer Gladys Fisher, along with classical, blues, and jazz
selections by courageous women composers of the suffrage era.
will feature AAUW and IUP performers including Sarah Mantel, Mary Jo
Bowes, AAUW Soirée Coordinators, Gretchen Barbor, Stanley Chepaitis,
Lillian Clemons, Evan Engelstad, Mary Logan-Hastings, Patricia Holmes,
Julianne Laird, Elary Mede, Carl Rahkonen, Susan Wheatley, and IUP music
faculty and students.
A “Suffragist Tea” reception will follow in the Blue Room greeted by AAUW hostess, Charlotte Manges.
A Suffragist Soirée is free and open to the public.

IUP's Pres. Commission on Status of Women and AAUW, Indiana County
Branch in partnership with IUP’s Commission on Women and the IUP Women’s and
Gender Studies program will host an advocacy and equity training “Smart Start”
workshop on Saturday, February 8, 11 am - 2 pm in the IUP Humanities &
Social Science Bldg. Rm. 114. Program Facilitating the workshop will be Dr.
Melissa Swagger, IUP Sociology professor and director of IUP’s Commission on
Women. Start Smart is an interactive workshop
designed to give women the skills they need to earn fair
compensation. Over the course of her working life, a woman will earn
roughly $1 million less than a man – simply because she’s a woman. All IUP
students, women and men, and young professionals in our community are invited

is no admission and refreshments will be provided.
