The “Pathfinder”: A New Publication Just for Students

Posted on 1/14/22 2:13 PM

The Division of Student Affairs is proud to announce that there will be a new, weekly IUP newsletter just for students. The Pathfinder will be sent to all IUP students on Fridays and will contain information to better inform and involve students in events, as well as highlight student groups and essential university information.

With the help from the Division of Marketing and Communications, the first issue of the Pathfinder will be sent to students on Friday, January 21, via email and will be written and managed by Director of Communications for Student Affairs Caitlin Aiello and Assistant Director for Program Coordination, Communication, and Assessment Brianna Drylie. The contents of the Pathfinder are broken down into eight distinct categories:

  • The Feature will highlight an achievement, important information, or updates from around the university.

  • Academic Advice will provide tips for academic success from the Academic Success Center and the IUP Libraries.

  • Did You Know? This section will emphasize a question of the week provided by the Hawks Q & A Center or guides from the Guide Program.

  • Talons Up! This section will highlight a sports game of the week. This will either be from our varsity sports teams or our club sports teams.

  • Around the Grove will draw attention to a student organization, student group event, or student group achievement.

  • Ranger’s Recs will include health and wellness tips and events written from the perspective of IUP’s own therapy dog, Ranger.

  • Professional Prep will provide students with advice from the Career and Professional Development Center.

  • Event of the Week will highlight an event happening on -campus that students shouldn’t miss.

Some IUP staff and faculty may remember the Beak, sent to students every weekday. With suggestions and critiques from students, the Pathfinder will better represent what not to miss at IUP.

And, it won’t fill up students’ inboxes, as it will be distributed on Fridays. Aiello said, “We are very excited for the release of the Pathfinder. We’ve considered what our students want to know about events and information related to IUP, but it will have a weekly email release. This is something that students wanted when harkening back to the Beak. We have aligned the goals of the Pathfinder explicitly for a student audience. We hope our student readers will find it informative, as well as helpful during their time as IUP students.”

Drylie and Aiello want to thank all of the publication’s contributors. Drylie said, “We want to be sure to recognize everyone who helped put the publication together. From support from Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Segar and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Malaika Turner to all of our content contributors from across the university, thank you. We are looking forward to hitting the ground running for the fall semester.”
