Biography
Joseph Baunoch (bass-baritone) trained as an apprentice artist with Toledo Opera and Dicapo Opera Theater. He has performed in over 50 different operas and over 30 opera roles, such as the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Dr. Bartolo and Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Don Magnifico in Cinderella, Colline in La Boheme, Timur in Turandot, the Secret Police Agent in The Consul, among others; and he has covered Dr. Dulcamara in L'Elisir D'Amore, Frank Murrant in Street Scene, and the Old Doctor in Vanessa.
Baunoch has performed with Toledo Opera, New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, Dicapo Opera Theater, Liederkranz Foundation, National Lyric Opera, and Opera Worcester, as well as the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed in several opera outreach programs across the country with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Toledo Opera, and Manhattan School of Music. In 2010, Baunoch was recognized as a winner in the Classical Singer Magazine Convention Competition in the Profession Division.
Baunoch received his doctor of musical arts degree from Michigan State University in 2009, where he performed in a live webcast as the Capitan in Daniel Catan's opera Florencia en al Amazonas and traveled to China to perform at the Shenyang Conservatory. He has sung in master classes with legendary opera mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, baritone Haijing Fu, and Marlena Malas; and studied voice with former Metropolitan Opera tenor Richard Fracker, David Okerlund, Ted Puffer, Spiro Malas, and Anne Perillo.
Baunoch's former and current students have been heard at home and abroad with the Metropolitan Opera, Nashville Opera, Wichita Grand Opera, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Delaware Valley Opera, Windy City Opera, Pittsburgh Baroque Ensemble, at the Atlantic Music Festival, and with the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; Lyric Opera Studio Weimar in Germany; Opera Festival di Roma; the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy; and Opera Orvieto and the Orvieto Art of Song Summer Program in Orvieto, Italy. His students have also continued their education, receiving scholarships into the finest graduate programs, including Indiana University, Boston University, Michigan State University, Temple University, Roosevelt University, Belmont University, University of North Texas, University of Utah, University of Washington, James Madison, Cal-State at Fullerton, Oklahoma State University, University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Florida, among others. His students have been accepted to the Peabody Conservatory, University of Houston, Depaul University, and Rutgers University.
Baunoch is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and currently serves as the district governor of the State of Pennsylvania. His students have placed in chapter, regional, and national competitions through NATS. Current and former students have included a regional finalist for the Laffont Metropolitan Opera National and a winner of the Encouragement Award for the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions.
