Biography
Joe Herndon has been one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the Pittsburgh region for over 20 years. Joe has played with various jazz, pop and classical artists from Tony Bennett, the Temptations, Bernadette Peters, Dennis DeYoung of Styxx, Toshiko Akioshi, Maceo Parker, and many other music legends.
Over the course of his career, he has performed countless musical theater shows with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Musical Theater, and the Pittsburgh Public Theater such as Wicked, A Chorus Line, Cats, Cabaret, Carousel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Chicago, Newsies, and Aladdin to name a few.
Joe is currently the leader and lead trumpet player of the Balcony Big Band, principal trumpet of the Latshaw Pops Orchestra, and is also a member of the Billy Price Band and the salsa band Azúcar as well as performing with many other groups.
In addition to his heavy playing schedule, Joe is the orchestra director at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School and teaches the Lincoln Park trumpet studio. Joe has been a guest director at several PMEA district Jazz festivals as well as a guest soloist with high school and college ensembles in the Western Pennsylvania region. Other teaching duties include trumpet instructor at Geneva college and a private teaching studio in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania.
Joe holds degrees in music education and music performance from Slippery Rock University as well as a masters's degree in trumpet performance from Duquesne University.
