Yong S. Colen published “Where’s the Procedural Fluency?: U.S. Fifth Graders’ Demonstration of the Standard Multiplication Algorithm” in the Journal of the Korean Society of Mathematical Education, Series D: Research in Mathematical Education.

Chrispell to Give Science Inspires Series Talk on Moving Strange Fluids in Unique Ways

John Chrispell, a mathematician in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, will be giving the next talk in the Science Inspires Series, titled “Fluids, Ratchets, and Transportation: Moving Strange Fluids in a Unique Way.” His talk will be held on Thursday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Cao Writes Paper, Creates App for COVID-19 Detection

Yongtao Cao, a statistician in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, has written a paper on monitoring the SARS-CoV-2 virus in wastewater, and has written an app to predict the number of COVID-19 cases for a provided SARS-CoV-2 concentration level in the wastewater.

S-COAM Scholars Discuss Careers at Alumni Panel

Alumni who participated in the Scholarships-Creating Opportunities for Applying Mathematics (S-COAM) program at IUP will be meeting virtually with current IUP students to discuss their career paths.  The meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, March 10, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Mathematics Students Participate in COMAP Modeling Contest

A team of mathematics students—Mikayla Dokos, Elizabeth Lees, and Micayla Schambura—participated in the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications Mathematical Contest in Modeling on February 4–8, 2021. 

Mathematics and Computer Scholarship Applications Available

The application form for scholarships in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is now available and the deadline to apply is March 15.

Chrispell to Offer Python Workshops

John Chrispell of the Mathematics Department will conduct two hands-on workshops on the programming language Python on February 17 and February 24, 2021.
