Eligibility Guidelines
Author Eligibility
Inquiry and Innovation accepts submissions from current Indiana University of Pennsylvania undergraduate and graduate students. We also accept collaborations between IUP students and faculty, as well as recent graduates (within one year of graduation). All submissions must have faculty advisor approval and support.
Submission Eligibility
- All contributing authors must be eligible to submit.
- Students may submit only one article per year.
- Each submission must have a faculty advisor who, at minimum, verifies the scholarly merit and originality of the work. This faculty advisor should indicate their verification by completing the faculty advisor approval form (sent through Infoready), which is required before Inquiry and Innovation will consider the submission for publication.
- All work must represent original scholarship not previously published or under review elsewhere (no simultaneous submission). By submitting to Inquiry and Innovation, authors agree to not submit this work for publication elsewhere until review at this publication is complete.
- Any work that includes human subjects must be accompanied by an IRB # and approval.
- Any work that includes animal or invertebrates must be accompanied by an IACUC # and approval.
- All work must be created by the student(s) and not co-authored with AI (see our AI policy for more details).
Students are encouraged to submit their work for feedback to the Center for Scholarly Communication’s Scholarly Editing and Writing Service prior to submission.
Submission Preparation
Format Requirements
- File Format: Submit manuscripts as Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx). If you have a multimodal project, please reach out to us at scholarly-communication@iup.edu to discuss your project.
- Citation Format: Follow APA (American Psychological Association) 7 citation style and format and language conventions.
- Length: Submissions should not exceed 5,000 words, including references, tables, and figure captions. No minimum length is required.
- Tables and Figures: Include in the main body of the text.
- Font: Use 12-point Times New Roman or similar serif font. Text should be black.
- Spacing: Double-space all text, including references, with no extra space between paragraphs. One space after periods, as per APA 7th edition guidelines.
- Margins: Use 1-inch margins on all sides.
- Page Numbers: Consecutively number all pages in the top right corner.
Articles
All articles should include the following:
- Title Page (separate document). The title page should include the:
- Title,
- Author(s) name(s),
- Contact information for authors (email and phone #),
- Faculty advisor name and email,
- Acknowledgements (if applicable),
- A short bio of 50-150 words that describes who you are (major, year, etc).
- Abstract: The first page of the article should include a 150- to 250-word abstract that summarizes the submitted work’s purpose, methods of inquiry, results, arguments, and conclusions. Please also include three to five keywords.
- Manuscript. The main text of your submission, conveying your original work. As applicable, include in-text citations throughout.
- References. If DOIs are available, you should include them in html format. Although The Journal publishes in APA, you may submit in other formats as long as they are:
- Recognized (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago) and appropriate to your discipline,
- Maintained consistently throughout the manuscript.
- Tables and Figures: Tables and figures should be included within the text of the manuscript immediately following the paragraph where they are first mentioned. Wherever possible, create them within the document itself rather than pasting pictures into the text. Please see our AI policy on AI-generated images.
Poster Submissions
Inquiry and Innovation welcomes adapted poster presentations for publication. These submissions should take one of two forms: Adapted Poster Presentation or Article Adaptation.
Adapted Poster Presentation
- Extended Abstract: Provide a comprehensive abstract (250–300 words) that fully describes the research.
- Expanded Methodology Section: Include a detailed methods section (300–1,000 words) that thoroughly describes:
- Research design and approach,
- Data collection procedures,
- Analytical methods,
- Limitations and delimitations.
- Discussion and Implications: Expand beyond the poster format to include interpretation of findings and broader implications.
Article Adaptation
You can adapt your poster presentation into an article. For this option, submissions should follow the aforementioned article submission parameters.
Hint: Do you want to take this step, but don’t know how? Try using the CSC’s worksheet! (LINK when created)

- Resolution: Poster images must be submitted at 300 DPI (dots per inch) minimum for print quality.
- File Format: Submit poster images as high-resolution TIFF, JPG, or PNG files.
