Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes

The following are the education objectives and student outcomes for the BS program in Safety, Health, and Environmental Applied Sciences.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. During their first five years upon graduation, graduates working as safety, health, and environmental professionals will demonstrate/communicate abilities to:
    1. anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices to manage overall risk,
    2. develop risk control methods, procedures, and programs and understand how they impact the organization,
    3. implement, administer, and advise others on risk controls and risk control programs, and
    4. measure, audit, and evaluate the effectiveness and continuously improve risk controls and risk control programs.
  2. Graduates are prepared to continue their professional growth and the integration of new knowledge into their profession.
  3. Graduates are prepared to act in a professional and ethical manner.

Student Outcomes

At the time of graduation, students will have gained knowledge in the following areas:

  1. environmental, health, and safety fundamentals
  2. physiological and/or toxicological interactions of physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic agents, factors, and/or stressors with the human body
  3. anticipation, identification, and evaluation of potentially hazardous agents, conditions, and practice
  4. fundamental exposure assessment techniques (both qualitative and quantitative)
  5. environmental, health, and safety data interpretation including statistical and epidemiological principles
  6. development of hazard control designs, methods, procedures, and programs
  7. accident/incident investigation and analysis
  8. industrial and construction safety
  9. legal aspects of environmental, health, and safety practices
  10. environmental, health and safety program management
  11. hazardous materials/waste recognition, control, and remediation
  12. air pollution fundamentals and control technologies
  13. water pollution fundamentals and control technologies
  14. environmental regulations and permitting processes
  15. environmental sampling and measurement methodologies

Additionally, students will be able to:

  1. identify, formulate, and solve broadly defined technical or scientific problems by applying knowledge of mathematics and sciences and/or technical topics to areas relevant to the discipline.
  2. formulate or design a system, process, procedure or program to meet desired needs.
  3. develop and conduct experiments or test hypotheses, analyze and interpret data and use scientific judgment to draw conclusions.
  4. communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  5. understand ethical and professional responsibilities and the impact of technical and/or scientific solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  6. function effectively on teams that establish goals, plan tasks, meet deadlines, and analyze risk and uncertainty.
