What is the EXPANDS program?
The Experiential Pathways and Networks for Data Science (EXPANDS) Opportunities Scholarship Program helps students build strong skills in data science. Undergraduate scholars receive up to $15,000 per year, while graduate students receive up to $20,000 per year. Scholars pursue a BS in Mathematics, BS in Computer Science, or an MS in Data Science and Applied Mathematics while getting real-world experience through team competitions, research projects, and career-focused workshops.
Application Process
Applications are available through the IUP website, and all materials are submitted electronically. Applicants may be invited to a virtual interview as part of the review process.
Before starting the scholarship application, prepare the following materials:
- Complete FAFSA application.
- Download all college transcripts, and email copies to: expands-scholarships@iup.edu
- Write responses to the following short essay questions:
- How would participating in the EXPANDS Opportunities Scholarship program support your academic and professional goals? (300-600 words)
- Highlight your involvement in extracurricular, employment, leadership, and/or academic activities (150-300 words).
- Pick a real-world issue and describe how data can be used to understand or contribute to its solution. (150-300 words)
- Contact information (email address) for two references, at least one of which is from a mathematics or computer science faculty member.
