What is the EXPANDS program?

The Experiential Pathways and Networks for Data Science (EXPANDS) Opportunities Scholarship Program helps students build strong skills in data science. Undergraduate scholars receive up to $15,000 per year, while graduate students receive up to $20,000 per year. Scholars pursue a BS in Mathematics, BS in Computer Science, or an MS in Data Science and Applied Mathematics while getting real-world experience through team competitions, research projects, and career-focused workshops.

Building Your Career

EXPANDS scholars participate in career-focused activities that prepare them for success in data science:

Hands-On Learning Experiences: Team up with other students to tackle real-world problems from various organizations, using the same tools these companies use every day.
Master Classes: Learn straight from professionals who will show you the latest techniques and how they’re being used in the real world.
Career Exploration Seminars: Come to workshops on building your career—think networking tips, professional skills, plus solid info on internships, grad school options, and the future of the data science job market.
Research Opportunities: Dive into your own data-driven projects, share your work at regional and national conferences, and maybe even get your work published.
Mentorship and Community: Work with faculty, graduate students, and peers in a supportive, cohort-based setting.

Scholarship Benefits

As a student in the EXPANDS program, you’ll get more than financial support. You will have a network that fosters critical thinking and builds your skills for a career in data science and applied mathematics.

Significant Financial Support: Up to $15,000 per year for undergraduate students and up to $20,000 per year for graduate students, based on demonstrated financial need.

Eligibility Requirements

The EXPANDS Opportunities Scholarship is open to students who meet the following criteria:

Degree Program: Will be a junior or senior and enrolled full-time at IUP in a STEM-focused undergraduate degree program or the MS in Data Science and Applied Mathematics.
Academic Standing: Minimum 2.75 GPA for undergraduates and 3.0 GPA for graduate applicants.
Financial Eligibility: Must have financial need after other scholarships and grant aid are applied.
Citizenship: US citizen, US national, US permanent resident, or admitted refugee.

Application Process

Applications are available through the IUP website, and all materials are submitted electronically. Applicants may be invited to a virtual interview as part of the review process.

Before starting the scholarship application, prepare the following materials:

Complete FAFSA application.
Download all college transcripts, and email copies to: expands-scholarships@iup.edu
Write responses to the following short essay questions:
- How would participating in the EXPANDS Opportunities Scholarship program support your academic and professional goals? (300-600 words)
- Highlight your involvement in extracurricular, employment, leadership, and/or academic activities (150-300 words).
- Pick a real-world issue and describe how data can be used to understand or contribute to its solution. (150-300 words)
Contact information (email address) for two references, at least one of which is from a mathematics or computer science faculty member.
