Decision Checklist
When reviewing web content (pages, and the text and images within them; excluding uploaded files) and making a decision on next steps, consider these questions.
-
Is this information critical to my area’s goals?
-
Is this information covered somewhere else already? Could it be linked to instead of repeating it?
-
Are there multiple pages that talk about the same topic that could be consolidated and/or removed?
Consolidating and Reorganizing Content
If you have identified content that could be consolidated, the digital team can help you with this process. However, if you want to make the updates yourself, here are some helpful tips.
Use Headings
Use the H2, H3, and H4 headings to organize your content. Not only does it make the page easier to scan, but it also makes it accessible to screen readers (tools used by blind or visually impaired visitors). If you only used bold or altered the text size, that doesn’t mean anything to a screen reader. For those users, they would just have a wall of text and no way to navigate through sections.
Consider Components
There are a few components available to help organize long-form content. Expanding boxes, or accordion content, have a heading and an expanding box that contains the text. When clicked, the box expands to expose the content. Highlight boxes help bring attention to an especially important part of the page (deadlines, calls to action). See more layout options on the How To site.
Copy/Paste with Two Windows
If you are moving content from one page to another, make use of the CMS’s ability to have multiple windows open at a time. If screen space allows, have the old/source page in one browser and the new/destination page up in another, side by side. Open the source page, copy what you need, and open the destination page and paste it in.
