Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s online master’s in criminology has been ranked second in the nation and first in Pennsylvania by Intelligent.com in its 2022 Best Online Programs in Criminology listing. The ranking is due in part to IUP’s reputation as a research university.

Phi Kappa Phi Reynolds Scholarship Awardee Selected

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania chapter of the interdisciplinary honor society of Phi Kappa Phi has selected Bradley Welman as this year’s recipient of the annual Reynolds Scholarship.

Criminology Graduate Student Organization Meeting, November 17

IUP students are invited to the next Criminology Graduate Student Organization meeting on Tuesday, November 17, at 4:00 p.m. via Zoom. This meeting will serve as a “meet-and-greet” where students may become familiar with the organization, as well as suggest topics for future meetings.

Phi Kappa Phi IUP Chapter Presents GRE Study Session

Students planning to take the GRE will be able to learn Princeton Review test-taking strategies using proactive review questions. The session will be held on October 23, 2020, at 4:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Keller Scholars Receive Gifts from Beaumont Foundation

Three current Keller Scholars—Samantha Bainey, Madison Shafron, and Jessica Borghise—visited the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice in Wilson Hall to receive gifts from the Beaumont Foundation: backpacks filled with school supplies to support their first-year studies at IUP.

Lee Publishes Findings Evaluating the Day Reporting Center

Daniel Lee, chairperson of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, published findings related to research evaluating the importance of the Day Reporting Center established in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The report is published with former colleagues Dave Myers and Dennis Giever.

Alumna Carter Receives 2020 Sarah Hall Award

The Division of Women and Crime of the American Society of Criminology announced that Lisa Carter, who earned her PhD in criminology in 2012 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is a recipient of the 2020 Sarah Hall Award.

The Division of Women and Crime of the American Society of Criminology announced Shelly Clevenger, who earned her PhD in criminology in 2012 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, as a recipient of the 2020 CoraMae Richey Mann “Inconvenient Woman of the Year” award.

IUP Criminology alumnus Kareem Jordan ’99, M’01, D’05 was named the inaugural director of Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Public Affairs at American University.

Gossett Appointed Editor of Criminal Justice Policy Review

Professor Jennifer Gossett from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice has been appointed to serve as editor of the Criminal Justice Policy Review. Gossett is the successor to Daniel Lee, who served as editor for the past four years.

Two Criminology Students Complete Dissertation Requirements

On June 17, 2020, two students from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Samantha Bennett and Chunghyeon Seo, defended their dissertation research projects.

Hilliard Retires as Criminology Department Secretary

Congratulations to Dorothy “Dottie” Hilliard on her retirement as the Criminology Department secretary. Dottie was the department secretary since 2004.

Mutchnick Receives Professor Emeritus

Robert Mutchnick was granted emeritus status from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice in May 2020. He joined IUP in 1982, serving as a faculty member and department chairperson, as a member of numerous departmental and university committees, and as an active member in the APSCUF faculty union, both at the local and state level. The faculty and students congratulate Professor Mutchnick on receiving this honor in appreciation of his distinguished career.

Kruis Wins Michael C. Braswell/Routledge Outstanding Dissertation Award

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice is pleased to announce that Nathan Kruis, PhD ’19, received the award for his dissertation, titled “Stigma and Perceptions of Opioid Users Among Criminal Justice Professionals and Students.”
