Evening News Anchor/Reporter
“I started as a news reporter in Topeka, Kansas, never imagining that I would be promoted to evening anchor after 3 years…a title I only dreamt of having one day. However, this title would never have been possible without the opportunity that IUP and the Promising Scholars Program gave me. They decided to take a chance on me. Knowing that the Promising Scholars team was there to support me and have my back made me feel invincible. If you are ready to pursue your dreams, don't pass up this opportunity with the Promising Scholars Program. It's more than just a scholarship. You will learn valuable skills that you will use in the workforce, make lifelong connections, and most importantly, have a team behind you dedicated to ensuring you succeed in the classrooms of IUP and beyond. Economics
Resource Manager
“I am a Resource Manager in Business Operations at Precision for Medicine, a clinical research organization specializing in oncology and rare diseases. In this role, I collaborate with Business Development, Project Management, and Recruitment teams to ensure our study teams are properly staffed and resourced for future projects, aligning team members with the right therapeutic expertise. My bachelor’s degree in economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania played a key role in securing this position, as my employer specifically sought someone with an economics background. However, none of this would have been possible without the Promising Scholars Program, which provided me with financial support and invaluable mentorship. Their guidance and resources not only made higher education accessible for me but also helped me navigate the challenges of completing my degree and achieving success in my career.”

Physical Education and Sport, Exercise Science
Physical Therapist
“I am a physical therapist and currently work in home health and outpatient settings. I graduated from IUP in 2016 with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology and received my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Gannon University in 2020. On a day-to-day basis, I see patients ranging anywhere from ages 5-95 and treat orthopedic conditions such as ACL repairs, Knee replacements, tendinitis, and other neuro and cardiovascular conditions such as stroke, heart failure, etc. Being a Physical Therapist has been great for my work-life balance and for allowing me to pursue other ventures, such as strength and conditioning at a local boarding school near my home. My job also allows me to spend time with family and friends. Being a part of the Promising Scholars program was an essential building block in my journey to becoming a Physical Therapist. The mentor/mentee program, volunteer hours, and the rest of the requirements of the retention aspect of the program all prepared me for PT school, which was very time-consuming and regimented. I am certain I would have had more difficulty getting through PT school without the preparation I received from the Promising Scholars program. I am so grateful to IUP and the Promising Scholars program for contributing to my success!”

Nursing
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Owner, Behavioral Wellness for Women
“I was honored to be accepted into the Promising Scholars Program, formerly the Board of Governors’ Scholarship Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. My time at IUP, enriched by the Promising Scholars Program, laid a strong foundation for my professional journey. The rigorous academic environment and supportive community at IUP allowed me to excel and develop a deep understanding of psychiatric nursing. The scholarship program provided invaluable opportunities, including mentorship and research experiences, which sparked my passion for mental health nursing. These experiences prepared me to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner and ultimately led me to establish my psychiatric private practice, Behavioral Wellness for Women. Today, I specialize in perinatal mental health, where I support women through their most vulnerable times, thanks to the skills and knowledge I gained at IUP.”

Psychology
MBA Candidate at the University of Florida
“As a first-generation immigrant, it was crucial to select a college with a supportive community that fostered confidence in my abilities, and I found that at IUP. Through the Promising Scholar Program, I was deeply engaged in the university's efforts to recruit black and brown students and advocated for educational equity. My involvement in the program’s leadership opportunities, academic challenges, and staff guidance laid the groundwork for a successful career in college admissions. It later inspired me to pursue a master’s in organizational leadership. I even had the honor of working for my Alma Mater as a Regional Recruiter! After eight years of growth in enrollment management, I am now expanding my business acumen through an MBA to transition into the private sector.”

“I work in the higher education profession as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions. My sole purpose is to help guide students through their college and career search. My experiences before this role have been in the social work field as a Juvenile Detention Coordinator, Behavior Specialist, and CYF Caseworker. In addition, I worked in financial services as a Life Insurance Agent. In my current role as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions, I conduct high school visits, attend college fairs, conduct presentations about the benefits of going to college, read applications, and meet with families and students to discuss their options for college. Being a part of the Promising Scholars program and attending IUP helped me realize that my passion is helping other students succeed in college. Although my first job was not in higher education, I knew I wanted to work in higher education and be influential like Mr. Shawn Jones was for me! The Promising Scholars program showed me my worth and pushed me to graduate as Magna Cum Laude a semester early. To this day, I talk so highly about the program and would love to work for a university with a similar program or start my own one day! In addition, IUP felt like a home away from home! This was the first time I was truly surrounded by like-minded people and people who looked like me! I am so thankful for the doors open from attending IUP and being a part of the Promising Scholars program!”

“I am a licensed professional counselor working as a clinician in the mental health field. I work with a wide range of mood, personality, and cognitive disorders. My past experiences have led me to work as a case manager, therapist, and support for those individuals with intellectual disabilities, both young and old. It has been rewarding to be of assistance to my clients. I have achieved a work/life balance that I enjoy by doing what I do, which has brought me a sense of accomplishment. Being able to determine my schedule and find ways to supplement my time with activities and hobbies I enjoy is rewarding. I can see the personal growth I've attained through the program reflected in my day-to-day activities as I'm consistently working within professional settings with a diverse group of individuals. One of the best pillars of the promising scholar's program is the commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The scholarship helped my family and me tremendously. Throughout this program, I was given a lot of support and resources to succeed in college. Privacy and Cybersecurity Associate Attorney
“I am a data privacy and cybersecurity Associate Attorney. Most of my days consist of assisting clients nationwide in responding to security incidents ranging from phishing emails to ransomware events. I act as breach counsel to help determine what legal obligations my clients must perform due to these events. When not at work, I often help assist close friends and family in other practice areas such as wills, family law, and civil disputes. Being a part of the Promising Scholars and attending IUP has helped me navigate the world after college. The program provided me with a group of individuals acting as a home away from home. Being born and raised in inner Philadelphia, being on campus was quite a shock initially. Fortunately, I could connect with Scholars from similar backgrounds while learning from those with limited experience. IUP was truly a home away from home, and the Promising Scholars program provided a safe space to connect, study, and truly enjoy the college experience with partners and mentors who cared, and still do care, about its Scholars' success.”

Finance
MBA Leadership Development Program Manager, Vanguard
“I am a financial service professional anchored to a career rooted in servant leadership and enabling everyone's access to investment success. My experiences span transformational efforts, talent development, and relationship management. To supplement my daily responsibilities, I often provide financial literacy resources, support diversity access, and tend to the vast needs of my immediate and extended family. Being the first in my family to strive toward certain milestones brought challenges, but it also taught me the importance of finding a strong, supportive community. I chose the Promising Scholars Program at IUP because it offered more than just a financial investment; it provided a foundation for growth and success, surrounded by peers and mentors who shared my drive. The program and various resources at IUP played a pivotal role in preparing me for the uncertainties of my career. They gave me the confidence to excel in the financial services industry. Reflecting on my time at IUP, I’m deeply grateful for the support, guidance, and sense of belonging the Promising Scholars Program provided. This decision continues to pay off in my personal and professional journey.”

Accounting
Senor Internal Auditor
“Attending IUP as a Promising Scholar has helped me get to where I am today by providing opportunities, extracurricular activities, and forming connections. When I began my journey as a Promising Scholar in 2015, I instantly had crucial connections with faculty members and current promising scholars. These connections helped guide me through my four years at IUP by advising me on course selection and campus events/clubs. They also have different programs like the mentor/mentee, debate, and mock interviews/resume preparation. These programs provided me with mentorship, real-world skills, and the knowledge to help me land my first job at Deloitte. Long after graduation, I still have strong connections with several of the Promising Scholars in my cohort. I will eternally be grateful for the Promising Scholar program and all the career opportunities it has opened for me.”

Management Information Systems
Aviation Officer
“Upon Graduating from IUP in 2021, I departed for the U.S. Army Flight School, where I trained to be an Aviation Officer. I graduated from Army Flight School in 2023 as an AH-64 Apache helicopter pilot. I am now serving as a Maintenance Platoon Leader and pilot at Hunter Army Airfield. My responsibilities include not only operating the aircraft but also managing the maintenance needs for 24 Apache and the health and welfare of 40 soldiers in my platoon. Over my four years at IUP, the Promising Scholars program provided me with many experiences. These experiences include the camaraderie built on the football field, the early morning PT sessions with ROTC, and facilitating a campus food pantry with my fellow promising scholar peers. Although this was a lot to pack into four years, the experiences I gained, the relationships I built, and the involvement in the community IUP and Promising Scholars provided me with a toolbox that I have taken to where I am today.”

Nurition
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
“I am a nutrition and dietetics professional making an impact and being a trailblazer in the field of nutrition to help bridge the gap of generational health for future generations. My skills and talents vary in leadership and management, nutrition counseling, food service, child and maternal nutrition, clinical/medical nutrition, and community-based nutrition. To complement my daily responsibilities, I provide families, moms, children, expecting mothers, and those suffering from various diseases (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.), with nutrition education dedicated to their individualized needs. This includes breastfeeding education, calorie counting, specific diets, picky eating strategies, and basic nutrition education. I provide them with verbal, tangible, intangible, and digital resources dedicated to the specific access of those I work with. I utilize an individualized approach as all needs are different on a case-by-case basis. It fulfills me seeing that I help and teach people new things to teach others. This also continues to build on my life's goal of spreading nutrition-based generational health, as I firmly believe that food is medicine. In sum, without my choice of attending IUP and my experience as a promising scholar, I wouldn’t be as well versed in my career as I am now. I have earned both my bachelor's and master's degrees from IUP, which the promising scholar's program encouraged me to pursue. Being a promising scholar has helped me get an early step in creating lasting relationships during my time in college and helped me develop and grow through those relationships to the person I am today. The program also kept me on my toes with setting a grade point standard and kept me involved and evolving as a scholar in my specific department as I graduated top of my class in my major. Going to a PWI as a minority from the inner city was a new experience for me. Still, the promising scholar's program branched and expanded my knowledge and comfortability levels while growing through diverse environments and situations. I am extremely thankful that I was able to go from a student to a mentor for the Promising Scholars program at IUP. I still hold and cherish the connections, knowledge, and opportunities that this program has given me. No matter how far I go in my career and life, I will always have a piece of IUP and the promising scholar's program within me.”

The skills I learned while attending IUP have remained with me throughout my career. Being part of the Promising Scholars generated a strong foundation for my success. “My professional journey is a story of growth fueled by diverse experiences and a commitment to continually learning. After graduating from IUP in 2014, I began my career in a Finance Leadership Development Program. Over seven years, I had the opportunity to advance my career while leading initiatives that celebrated diversity and inclusion. The Promising Scholars Program at IUP played a crucial role in my development, providing me with the leadership skills and cultural awareness needed to thrive in today’s global workforce. My time as a tour guide at IUP was also instrumental, as it helped me develop the public speaking and communication skills that have been key to my success. These experiences collectively prepared me for the rigors of law school and now fuel my success as an International Tax Associate. Each step of the way, I’ve been reminded of the importance of leadership, communication, and the ability to connect across cultures—lessons I carry with me thanks to the foundation laid by the Promising Scholars Program.”

International Studies
First-Year Student at Yale Law School
“I am a first-year student at Yale Law School. As such, I am learning the foundations of Law in the top-ranked law school in the country and learning directly from professionals with real-world experience in the legal field; some of whom have published best-seller legal books, worked on Joe Biden's Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court, written for Forbes, amongst other great things. Being a part of the Promising Scholars program helped me develop the confidence I needed to apply to Yale in the first place. Coming from a low-income family and having attended an underfunded inner-city high school, the idea of obtaining higher education already seemed unrealistic, so attending a law school (particularly one of Yale's calibers) seemed completely out of reach. The Promising Scholars program helped me not only by providing the necessary financial aid for me to afford an undergraduate institution but also by providing me with plenty of events and workshops that helped me improve my networking and professional skills. The program also made me feel empowered enough to take my chances and apply to Yale Law School. I am very grateful for having had this amazing opportunity.”

I studied abroad, worked at the school's Kathleen White Writing Center, and met with alumni, which helped set me on a career path toward international service and development. IUP and the Promising Scholars program gave me invaluable tools to be a global citizen and jump-started my road to success.”

Sociology
Tax Attorney
“I am a Tax Attorney, currently in the development phase of solo practice, providing Tax advice to individuals and small businesses who, more commonly, do not have adequate tax assistance. I provide businesses with tax advice on issues spanning formation, compliance, and other transactional matters and assist individuals with estate planning needs (focusing on the tax implications of these transactions). Through my work, I aim to provide competent advocacy and advice on wealth creation and maintenance opportunities for underserved populations. Attending IUP as a Board of Governors’ Scholar (now Promising Scholar) helped me tremendously in my life pursuits and aspirations. While I knew before attending IUP that I wanted to be an Attorney, my exposure (through the BOGs First Year Experience) to coursework required me to lean into and hone my analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills, which enhanced my curiosity for wanting to learn more. I gained so much more perspective on the multitude of ways in which I can serve the community (even beyond what I thought I understood at the time) by learning/gaining new lenses through which to understand the needs of those I wish to serve. Through a stellar lineup of professors who poured so much shapeshifting perspective into me, I am so much more well-rounded, and for that, I am ever grateful for my experience as a BOG scholar. Above all, I learned never to stop learning. As a graduate of the class of 2009, I am learning 15 years later.”

Entrepreneur/ CEO of The Phoenix Club
“I am an entrepreneur and the CEO of a company I created called The Phoenix Club, Incorporated. We specialize in offering financial education classes to underprivileged communities in different cities. My day-to-day activities consist of identifying growth opportunities where members of a community may want or need a Phoenix Club Chapter, building and leading teams to grow the organization, and assuring that our organization has a long-range strategy that achieves its missions, which makes consistent and timely progress. Being a part of the Promising Scholars program helped me foster real confidence in myself, which I now use to grow my organization further. They also gave me a caring community I could rely on to guide me while attending IUP. I found that highly invaluable, mainly because I was a young African American man beginning his college journey.”

Geography
Environmental Protection Specialist
“I am an Environmental Protection Specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). My daily responsibilities include evaluating the potential impacts Rural Development projects in Delaware and Maryland will have on sensitive historic, cultural, and environmental resources. As part of this evaluation, I facilitate consultations with tribes and local, state, and federal agencies to mitigate or eliminate any adverse impacts—some projects I’ve been involved with support the development of multi-family housing and wastewater treatment plant improvements. As an Environmental Geography major and Anthropology minor, attending IUP provided me with the educational foundation to identify and evaluate natural resources and connect with individuals of various backgrounds, including rural communities. While Attending IUP, I was an Intern for the Indiana County Office of Planning and Regional Development (ICOPD), which first exposed me to reviewing project proposals and how to have effective meetings. These are skills I continue to use in her current role. I credit the Promising Scholars program with providing me with the leadership skills needed to be successful as an Environmental Scientist.”

As a dedicated public servant, I represent our citizens by upholding the law and crafting strategic initiatives that serve the public interest. Every day, I strive to provide exceptional service to our clients, analyze complex data sets, and draw from diverse sources such as databases, manuals, and policies to conduct thorough data analyses. Additionally, I serve as the liaison for the agency, preparing critical reports for submission and review by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and Congress. My dedication to excellence has been recognized with two JMD Special Commendation Awards for my role in implementing and maintaining outstanding performance standards within the Department-wide Unified Asset Management System (UAMS) and the Justice Parking and Remote Credentialing System (JPARC). Reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my career. As a participant in the Promising Scholars program at IUP, I was able to pursue higher education without the burden of financial strain. This opportunity, introduced to me by Shawn Jones at my Philadelphia high school’s annual college expo, was a turning point in my life. Coming from a low-income family with no prior college education, this scholarship allowed me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and graduate Cum Laude in 2016. It also opened doors to a network within academia that inspired me to pursue a master’s degree, supported by additional scholarships. This experience has been instrumental in shaping my path, and it continues to fuel my passion for public service and lifelong learning.”

On a day-to-day basis, I manage their cash flows, oversee their financial picture, and work on custom analytics to help them make decisions. I am also client-facing, so I can speak directly with my clients. I also can work closely with my peers and serve on organizations at the company. We try to give back to the community by organizing financial literacy workshops with non-profits. These are the moments that I truly cherish, and I feel they give me the best opportunity to give back and enhance myself as a professional. I attribute my current skill base to a lot of different factors. One of the main contributors, though, was my time at IUP. More specifically, being a part of the Promising Scholars Program. The program helped me get out of my comfort zone and enhance my ability to make connections. From meetings to organized events, the program takes you from being an average college student and turns you into a successful professional. It’s certainly your commitment, but this isn’t possible alone. Leaning on those invested in the program is integral to getting the most out of your experience. Thank you to all those who helped me get where I am today.”

“My name is Kevin Lemus Moreno, and I am originally from Moroleon, Gto. México. I came to the United States in 2014 and knew little English. I am on deployment orders to Africa for a year as its primary response force to threats. However, after I returned home from deployment, I was given an opportunity that would not have been possible without the help of Promising Scholars. As an enlisted soldier with a bachelor’s degree, I was placed on the list to choose whether I wanted to become a Warrant Officer or Officer in the United States Army. With the help of Promising Scholars, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in the business honors college for Marketing with a concentration on business projects and planning. Additionally, I received a minor in economics. Nevertheless, before deployment, I embraced an entire career in the military as a federal supply chain technician.”

Fashion Merchandising
Administrative Director
“I’m currently the administrative director of two departments in the mental health field, focusing on IBHS and Family-Based Services. After graduating from IUP, I used my degree to manage different retail stores for a few years. Then, I shifted to the early education field, where I grew from teaching to management and administrative roles over eight years. Being in the mental health field allows me to continue helping others, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Growing up, I was taught that hard work, kindness, and faith were the keys to success. With the help of the Board of Governor’s scholarship (now Promising Scholars Program), I was able to stick to those values and continue learning so much more. The community within the Board of Governor’s Scholar Program allows you to stay true to yourself while achieving success. I still hold onto those values and now teach them to my daughter. She often asks me about my experiences at IUP, and I always tell her they were made possible thanks to the Board Governor’s Scholar Program. She sees daily how continuing my education was crucial to getting me where I am today, personally and professionally. I hope that one day, she'll have the opportunity to experience the program for herself.”

Criminology
Evidence Redaction Aid
“I am a legal professional with over 5+ years of experience in criminal law, both defense and prosecution in Pennsylvania and Arizona, immigration law, and lastly, business law. I believe in the law and the potential of our justice system. I am passionate about bettering the system for everyone and helping grow the small percentage of Latinas in the legal profession. My journey started as a legal intern while studying Criminology at IUP. That foundation led me to become a Legal Assistant, a Paralegal, a communications Director, and a Legal Liaison for a multimillion-dollar company, and now an Evidence Redaction Aide, specializing in the handling and analysis of body-worn Cameras with The City of Phoenix's Prosecutor's Office. My next goal is to attend law school in the Fall of 2026! Being a part of the Promising Scholars Program and attending IUP challenged me and helped me become more well-rounded as a student and a person. PSP and IUP helped me believe I can be a change-maker. They taught me to be a problem solver and bring solutions and innovation to the conversation rather than complain, remain stagnant, and accept the status quo. The requirements of the program, such as study hours, debate team, volunteering, etc., held me accountable, pushed me to become the best version of myself, and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, which led me to feel empowered to take on university-wide challenges and missions during my time at IUP, and whatever came my way after graduation. I say with pride that I was also the student coordinator for the PSP during my four years at IUP, which blossomed my passion for service. Since graduating, I have been active in my community in eastern Pennsylvania. I have been coaching and mentoring underserved athletes year-round, networking with local nonprofit organizations, raising money to help underserved athletes access club volleyball, and connecting with local leaders and university recruiters to help with the college admission and recruiting process. I hope to continue giving back to my newfound community in Phoenix, AZ, soon. Without PSP, I am not sure if the spark that was always in me would have turned into a roaring, passionate fire! I am forever grateful to the staff of PSP and the IUP Community. I am proud to be a PSP alum and would encourage black and brown students to bet on themselves and participate in this program.”

Graduate School Candidate
“Being at IUP would not have been possible without the support of the Promising Scholars program. The financial relief of the scholarship motivated me to work hard for the privilege of receiving an education and continue to strive for more opportunities. Through the requirements of maintaining my scholarship, I had maintained above the required GPA, created a community with promising scholar peers, and chose to become a role model for what success can look like when you blend hard work and community into your everyday life. I am a first-year doctoral student, and I entered right after receiving my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in applied statistics. It is an honor to have contributed to the community and academic scholarship of the Promising Scholars program, and I am deeply grateful for how it shaped my life.”

“As a corporate professional, I work within the financial sector, specifically focusing on connecting with corporate clients and analyzing their business operations and treasury processes. By analyzing these components, I am able to advise clients on improving processes for accounts receivable and accounts payable, along with provide guidance on fraud mitigation, increasing liquidity, and the efficiencies of embedded finance. Coming from a city environment that was negative and limiting, I knew I wanted to grow and hone my potential elsewhere in a place that would provide me the resources to do so. When it came time to decide on a university, I knew that IUP was the right fit, but more importantly, knew that I wanted to participate in IUP’s Promising Scholar’s Program. Outside of the financial assistance given by participating in the program, Promising Scholars made me challenge myself in terms of learning, character, development and leadership by being placed alongside other highly-driven students that came from a similar ethnic or socioeconomic background. As a result, I ensured that my education and undergraduate experience would be enriching to the greatest extent, along with putting myself in a position where I thrive post-graduation.”

Criminology, Pre-law
Assistant Prosecutor
“As an assistant prosecutor, I view public service and mentorship as essential values. These principles were instilled in me during my time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where I was a Promising Scholar. The Promising Scholars Program played a crucial role in my journey to becoming a criminal prosecutor. The required study hall hours fostered academic focus, while mentor-mentee relationships provided invaluable guidance and encouragement. My participation in the Frederick Douglass Institute deepened my understanding of diversity and equity, enhancing my ability to advocate for justice. Additionally, involvement in the debate team refined my critical thinking and public speaking skills—essential tools in the courtroom. Overall, these experiences solidified my commitment to the legal field and equipped me with the skills necessary to navigate my career successfully. The Promising Scholars Program is more than just a scholarship; it provides the tools to thrive well beyond college.”

Management Information Systems
Senior Information Technology Auditor
“I am an information security professional anchored to servant leadership, enabling everyone's access to secure and efficient technological solutions. My experiences span transformational efforts, talent development, and relationship management. To supplement my daily responsibilities, I often provide information security literacy resources, support diversity access, and tend to the vast needs of my immediate and extended family. Being part of the Promising Scholars program (Board of Governors at the time of my attendance) at IUP helped me significantly by providing the following: Mentorship - Having someone who had been part of the program to not only provide advice but serve as a guide to success at IUP, which was my first time being away from home. Leadership opportunity - Through tours and other volunteer programs, I was provided the opportunity to meet the school leadership and be known around campus. Community - When leaving home, the most important thing to a student is to have a sense of community so far from home. Having a group of friends with the same goals helped create a home away from home. I have used these three pillars—mentorship, leadership opportunities, and community—in both my professional and personal life, allowing me to excel and contribute meaningfully in various roles, from IT Solution Architect to Senior Information Technology Auditor. As I pursue my Doctoral Degree in Business Administration, Management, and Operations at Liberty University, I continue to embody Winston Churchill's words: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts."”

Political Science
Litigation Associate at Dell, Moser, Lane & Loughney LLC
“I’m an insurance defense attorney working at a mid-size firm, with a license to practice law in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Before I attended law school, passed two bar exams, and began my legal career, however, I was a proud student at IUP and recipient of the Board of Governors Scholarship (now the Promising Scholars Program). I regularly think back with warm memories about my time at IUP which all began with my overnight visit through the Program. That visit set me on a great path at a wonderful institution with kind supportive faculty and where I made lifelong friends who all helped me on my academic journey. I could not be more grateful for the experience I had at IUP.”

Communications Media
Marketing and Business Development Specialist, Duane Morris LLP
“My journey has been one of growth and empowerment. As a first-generation college graduate, the Promising Scholars Program introduced me to a world of possibilities. It wasn’t just the financial support that made a difference—it was the community of like-minded individuals, mentors, and peers who believed in me, pushed me, and equipped me to thrive in a competitive environment. The support prepared me for a thriving career where I now work alongside senior business leaders. It was through IUP’s rigorous academic environment, coupled with the encouragement of the Promising Scholars community, that I gained the confidence to thrive in a competitive environment. The skills I gained at IUP have shaped every step of my career. From leading marketing campaigns for a global law firm to the ability to speak in front of large audiences, I learned that my voice and contributions were valuable. IUP and the Promising Scholars Program helped me develop a foundation rooted in resilience, adaptability, and self-empowerment—skills that continue to guide my professional journey today. At each step, I’ve relied on these values and skills to elevate my career, as well as lift others as I climb. Representation and community are essential, especially for Black students. The Promising Scholars Program was more than a launchpad, it helped me see the limitless potential within myself. My message to prospective and current students is this: embrace every opportunity and trust the process. The investment you make today, both in your education and in the relationships you build, will pay dividends throughout your career.”

Early Childhood Education and Special Education
Kindergarten Learning Support Teacher
“I am a first-year kindergarten learning support teacher at my local kindergarten center in Kennett Square, PA, right outside of the West Chester area. I work directly with the school’s admin, district admin in the special ed department, and with behavioral consultants/guidance counselors, and/or psychologist all within our school. My experiences range all from kindergarten to 12th grade in any special education classroom and from Pre-K to 6th grade general education. My day to day looks different constantly and varies depending on how the child or children are feeling. But there is never a day where I am not reminded that I chose the right career. Being the first woman in my family to graduate high school and college and move 5 hours away from home, brought lots of tears, moments of difficulty, challenges, but most importantly it brought strength, endurance and perseverance from within that I didn’t know I had if I had not gone to IUP. I chose to be a part of Promising Scholars Program because not only did it offer financial stability for my family, but it created and foster a family-like community at IUP. It provides all their students with a successful foundation to strive and succeed as an individual and a student. Being part Promising Scholars and other various organizations on campus help me be the person I am today. It prepared me so much more that what I had expected. I graduate IUP knowing that there’s a community that will accept you just as you are. I learned the importance of what it is to have a support system to rely and lean on. I learned all of this and more because of the PSP and all the resources IUP has to offer. I am truly appreciative of all the support and sense of belonging Mr. Shawn Jones and the team provides to their students. It is something that I look for in my daily life and that I have gratefully found in my career because I know the values the Promising Scholars have held us up to. The values have been shown countless times since graduating, and I will forever be thankful for that.”

Accounting
Senior Auditor
“Since graduating from IUP, my career path has been geared toward the accounting industry. More specifically, I have had the opportunity to begin my professional journey as an auditor for a Big Four accounting firm. For the first few years of my accounting career, I could examine company accounts and financial control systems, gauge levels of financial risk within organizations, and ensure that financial reports and records were accurate and reliable. I recently transitioned into the private sector to work for a company that produces wholesome food products using environmentally friendly techniques. My previous experience as an auditor and work with the IUP Food Pantry greatly influenced my decision to make the exciting transition within the accounting industry. Being a part of the Promising Scholars Program was very beneficial for me not only did the program alleviate financial burdens, but it also allowed me to interact with other black and brown students who were interested in increasing access to higher education. I was motivated by the exceptional students and mentors involved in the program. The support I received was instrumental in boosting my self-confidence and preparing me for the professional environment. Receiving the Promising Scholars Award lightened my financial burden, which allowed me to focus more on my education. The support and generosity I received throughout my years in the program is not something I will soon forget.”

“I am a Human Resources Specialist, exposed to all areas of HR, but who primarily focuses on the administration of our benefits program. I am responsible for reviewing benefits with new employees, I help with payroll reviews, and the administration of the compensation program. I assist in the processing of life status changes, carrier enrollment, and new hire orientation. I help with leave-related documentation and handle workers' compensation claims, as well. Being a first-generation college graduate presented certain difficulties, but it also enabled me to grow into an independent woman. Being a part of the Promising Scholars Program has been instrumental in my success. By providing me with financial support and opportunities to grow my professional network, the Promising Scholars Program helped me to make the most of my academic experience. I was able to connect with other peers and first-generation college students through the program, with whom I could share my experiences and learn from. Without the Program's mentoring, encouragement to succeed, and provision of opportunities to learn and step outside of my comfort zone, I would not be where I am now. I am grateful to have been a part of the program that surrounded me with young, talented, and committed individuals who shared the same goals and aspirations.”

Regional Planning
Urban Planner & Community Cultivator
“IUP’s wide selection of accredited programs made it the best option for me to start my urban planning education. Not only did the Promising Scholars Program make my attendance financially feasible, but the structure ensured my success. The program taught me the value of mentorship, networking, succeeding and then sending the elevator back down for those after you. These are values I always held, but at IUP I was able to hone in on those values. I learned to support them with data, put them to the test while living away from home for the first time, and choose my own destiny. Today, I am an urban planner in a city north of Boston. I live in a neighborhood I love and I am following the plan I had as an IUP student for my life. I got the degree and the job and the apartment. Now, I can use my voice and my knowledge to make the world better.”

Communications Media
Senior Content & Publishing Strategist
“I started my time at IUP as an undecided major. I changed it twice before choosing English and eventually adding Journalism for a dual degree. The Promising Scholars Program laid the groundwork for my time at IUP, setting me up for success even when I didn't know what I wanted to study. It may be cliche to say, but having a strong foundation is essential, and the Promising Scholars Program gave me that, introducing me to resources on campus and fellow students who have become life-long friends. Since graduating from IUP, I've taken lessons learned in classes and my extracurricular activities and applied them to my work at entertainment and public relations agencies. Social Media was not a career path when I was in school, but through those transferable skills I learned in my majors - and that foundation I built with the PSP - I've been able to make it one and have worked with A-list talent and global corporations as a result.”

The program’s emphasis on academic excellence, personal development, and community engagement resonated deeply with me. One of my favorite parts of the program was the awesome friendships that were developed with other promising scholars, as I was able to engage with people that are also highly motivated. We helped each other learn and grow, and many of the friends I made through the program went on to become well accomplished individuals.”

I previously had the opportunity to intern at the Chester County Coroner’s Office which allowed me to learn about government jobs that go unnoticed but are crucial to society. As a first-generation Latina, IUP’s Promising Scholars Program provided their utmost support as I was able to be part of a diverse and inclusive community on campus. Their financial support allowed me to focus on my academics and campus engagement. With the guidance at hand I was able to complete my sophomore requirement of joining the Frederick Douglass Debate Team during my freshman year. My participation on the team resulted in an immense improvement on my public speaking and leadership skills. Aside from their financial investment in us, it serves as a great networking opportunity as you're surrounded by others who share the same drive for success. I am grateful for the invaluable experiences that have shaped me professionally and personally during my time as a Promising Scholar.”

K/8 Spanish teacher
“Since graduating from IUP, I have learned the value the Promising Scholars program holds. Between the support I received throughout my undergraduate years and the exposure I had both academically and culturally, I unexpectedly and successfully secured a position teaching kindergarten through eighth grade Spanish. Although it was nothing I had originally intended doing after graduating, the Promising Scholars Program enabled me to be prepared for unexpected circumstances and opportunities sent my way. Without the program, I may not have had the background, flexibility, or skill set that open the door I needed this season life has brought me through.”
