1098-T Information

Current Students can access their forms on EasyPay portal under Statements.

ECSI is a third-party company that processes all 1098-T tax forms (starting with the 2012 tax year). 1098-T retrieval instructions are as follows:

• Go to ECSI to sign in or register.
• If you have not already registered for an account, create an account under Register on the right side of the page.

Step 1

1. Choose a username (the system will tell you if the name is available).
2. Create a password of your choosing.

Step 2

1. Enter your contact information requested.
2. Click Continue.

Step 3

1. Enter your address.
2. Click Continue.

Step 4

1. Create three security questions and answers.
2. Click the I’m not a robot box.
3. Click Save your profile.

The system will take a minute or so to save, but a successful completion will result in a return to the home page with this green message at the top: “Congratulations! You have successfully created your user profile. Please sign in to connect and access your accounts.”

You will also get an email confirmation from ECSI confirming the creation of your Easy Path account. Note that the Heartland Key in the email is an example, not your actual Heartland Key.

Click Continue and follow the instructions below to access your form. 

1. If you have already registered for an online account, enter your username and password on the left side under “Sign In.”
2. Next, click on your Heartland Key under “Tax Documents and Information” below your school’s name.
3. Any tax forms available for your school will be displayed here.
4. Select View/Print Statement next to the desired form to view.
5. If you are looking for prior year forms, click on the History tab.
6. Click Continue and enter your username and password.
7. Select a method to receive your verification code (Text, Automated Call, or Email)
8. Click the I’m not a robot box
9. Click Send Verification Code
10. Enter the verification code you receive
11. Click Continue
12. Click the blue plus sign to connect an account to your profile.

To find your Heartland Key account:

1. You will need to call ECSI at 1-866-428-1098
2. There may be an extended wait, but the system does offer an opportunity to save your place in line and be called automatically when it is your turn
3. Once you have connected your account, you will not need to do these steps again

You may access the ECSI website anytime for information concerning your 1098-T on the ESCI website.

Your Form 1098-T will be available to you electronically on or before January 31. The form can be found by going to your MyIUP EasyPay Account under Statements. Everyone can access their forms on the ECSI website.

No, the college does not include amounts paid for books in Form 1098-T. You should consult with your tax advisor to determine if payments for books should be considered when preparing your income tax returns and determining eligibility for education tax credits or deductions.

There are potentially many reasons for this discrepancy. First, the amount in Box 1 only represents amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) and does not include non-qualified expenses (see above), which, though important, are not considered mandatory education expenses for tax purposes.

Secondly, Form 1098-T reports amounts that the student paid in a certain year, and the pay date does not necessarily correspond to the dates that the classes were attended. For example, tuition for the spring semester is typically billed in the prior year, so a student may have paid tuition for the spring semester in December even though classes don’t start until January. The best and most accurate source of information about the amounts that you paid for qualified tuition and related expenses will be your Activity Details.

Box 5 reflects the total scholarships, grants, and fellowships that the university is aware of, excluding any that are paid directly to the student. Scholarships, grants, and fellowships reported in this box could pay Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses reported in Box 1, but they could also pay expenses like housing and dining or insurance, which are not QTRE and therefore not reported in Box 1.

There are other possible reasons that may apply to your specific situation. Please consult with a tax advisor for more information.

Some May graduates will not be issued a Form 1098-T because there is a possibility that payments for QTRE for spring were made on or before December 31. The spring semester tuition charges were generally billed and posted in December and, therefore, would have been included on the prior year Form 1098-T. There could be carryover QTRE from the previous year that can be reported on the current Form 1098-T.

The college is not required, by the IRS, to furnish a Form 1098-T in the following instances:

• Payments for courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.
• Enrolled student is a nonresident alien, unless requested by the student.
• Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid
  entirely with grants/scholarships.
