• The office works to assist in the creation of a campus environment that promotes diversity and values individual differences. The office is committed to assist members of the campus community to resolve concerns and complaints pertaining to employees in regard to harassment and discrimination and to accommodate employees with disabilities. Services and Description

• One of the goals of the office of the Attorney General is to ensure that, as required by law, all Pennsylvanians are treated without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, age, religion, holding a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.), being disabled, being related to someone who is disabled, or having children under the age of eighteen. The Civil Rights Enforcement Section (CRES) was created to enforce laws that protect against such unlawful discriminatory treatment.
• If you believe you have been discriminated against based upon one of the above reasons, the CRES may be able to help correct the situation or may be able to direct you to the appropriate agency to help you.

Services and Descriptions

• The office serves student populations facing discrimination and the advocates and institutions promoting systemic solutions to civil rights problems. An important responsibility is resolving complaints of discrimination. Agency-initiated cases, typically called compliance reviews, permit OCR to target resources on compliance problems that appear particularly acute. OCR also provides technical assistance to help institutions achieve voluntary compliance with the civil rights laws that OCR enforces. Important parts of OCR's technical assistance are partnerships designed to develop creative approaches to preventing and addressing discrimination.
• OCR enforces several federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination in programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance from the Department of Education. These laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, and on the basis of age. These laws extend to all state education agencies, elementary and secondary school systems, colleges and universities, vocational schools, proprietary schools, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, libraries, and museums that receive U.S. Department of Education funds.
  • OCR enforces the following laws:
    • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin
    • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex
    • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability
    • Age Discrimination Act of 1975, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of age
    • Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability
