Shijuan LiuShijuan Liu is a professor of Chinese in the Department of Foreign Languages.

Liu has been involved with teaching Chinese as a foreign/second language since 1995. At IUP she teaches Chinese language courses at all levels. She also teaches additional courses in English related to Chinese literature, culture, film, and media. She received the Cengage Learning Award for Innovative Excellence in the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language from the national Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA), USA, in 2014.

Liu is a recognized leader in the application of technologies for language learning. She has been invited to give presentations and workshops at international conferences and various prestigious institutions (e.g., Michigan State University and Pennsylvania State University). She has been serving as the Column Editor on New Technologies for the Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching since 2010, and continues to play an instrumental role in organizing the biennial International Conference of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching (TCLT) since 2012 (as the co-chair for TCLT9 held in University of Macau in 2016).

Liu has published widely in areas related to language education, online education, and applied Chinese linguistics. Her work has appeared as book chapters and in peer reviewed journals such as the Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education, the Internet and Higher Education, The IALLT Journal for Language Learning Technologies, Quarterly Review of Distance Education, and Journal of Educational Technology and Society. Additionally, she has received a number of grants, such as the IUP's ACPAC Technology Exploration and Innovation funds, and worked as a key member of projects funded by National Science Foundation of China, Social Science Foundation of China, and Eisenhower Professional Development Grants.

Liu is an active member of both local and professional communities. She has successfully organized numerous campus-wide events, such as the annual celebration of the traditional Chinese Spring and Mid-Autumn Festivals. She founded IUP's Chinese Language and Culture Club with a group of students and has been serving as the club faculty advisor. She received the faculty recognition Award in the Living Learning category from the IUP's Center for Teaching Excellence in 2014, and was cited in U.S. News & World Report. She was elected to the national CLTA Board of Directors USA (2018-21), and has been an officer and key board of directors member of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Western Pennsylvania (CLTA-WPA) since its inauguration. In addition, she is on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals, including the journal of Chinese as a Second Language and the International Journal of Information & Communication Technology Education.

Liu holds a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Hebei Teachers College (currently Hebei Normal University), a MA in Modern Chinese from Renmin University of China, and an MS and PhD in Instructional Systems Technology from the School of Education of Indiana University at Bloomington. Before she joined IUP in 2011, she was a full-time faculty member teaching at Renmin University of China (Beijing), California State University at Los Angeles, and Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois).
