are unable to afford them. Open Educational Resources have the potential to
substantially lower the cost of education, give faculty more control over their
instructional materials, and promote student success. Want to learn more about

This workshop will introduce participants to what OER
materials are, how to locate high quality OER materials, and how and why your
colleagues are using them. Please bring
your laptop to this interactive session and join us to learn ways to implement
components of OER or to begin a total OER conversion!
Would you like to improve your advising skills and engage your
advisees in a more efficient and effective way? This session is for you! In it, expectations for academic advising will
be reviewed and suggestions for including advising in tenure,
promotion, and yearly review materials will be offered. Tips on efficient/effective
ways to set up advising meetings and communicating with your advisees, tools
and resources to use during advising meetings, and general advising tools and
resources will also be discussed. Participants can expect to come away
with an updated toolkit to help support and improve their current advising
Learning transfer refers to the ability of students to take
knowledge, skills, and strategies gained in an educational setting and adapt it
to a variety of contexts (educational, civic, professional, and personal).
While educators recognize the critical importance of transfer as a core goal of
education, researchers have long documented the challenge that students of all
levels have in transferring knowledge across contexts. This interactive
workshop introduces participants to the principles of learning transfer and
offers an opportunity to consider how to build learning transfer into courses
and curricula across the disciplines.
Participants are encouraged to bring their syllabus and course materials
to this workshop.
Building a sense of community in an online classroom can be a
challenge, but is an essential component for online student success and
retention. A panel of faculty, both experienced and new to online teaching,
will share methods they have used to successfully foster student engagement in
the online classroom. Participants can
expect to leave the session with a variety of potential strategies for
fostering student engagement in their own classes and with an enhanced learning
community of faculty members who can provide support and answer questions.
Improv is more than the gags and one-liners on “Whose Line is
It Anyway?” Improvisation skills are now being used in multiple professional
fields to improve communication, stimulate creativity and enhance
collaboration. In this inclusive, relaxed and interactive workshop, you will
learn some of the principles that underlie effective improvisation through
large and small group exercises that can be used in any classroom. Participants
can expect to take away simple but effective exercises to enhance student engagement
and empathetic communication through active learning.
