Graduates May Leave Their Mark on IUP Through Senior Class Gift

 Permanent link

Norm says to Make Your Mark at IUPGraduating seniors are invited to leave their mark on IUP by giving to the Senior Class Gift, a tradition that started at IUP in 1893. Those who do will help their fellow students.

“I am pleased to announce that in recognition of our experience, the Class of 2015 has chosen to make our gifts to the Dean’s Merit Scholarship funds of our respective colleges,” said Kelsey Adams, vice president of the Student Philanthropy Council and president of the Senior Class Gift Committee. “The Class of 2015 is committed to promoting the success of the students who will follow in our footsteps, and we know that by reinvesting in each college’s scholarship fund, we give our respective college deans the ability to reward academically talented students with merit-based scholarship support.”

The committee is urging all graduates to make a gift of $20.15 to commemorate their graduation. Students who give $20.15 or more will be given the opportunity to wear at graduation the Philanthropy Cord, a crimson and gray adornment reserved for those who participate.

Adams said this year’s class gift is 58 percent to a goal of $6,000. In this academic year alone, 79 students have benefited from Dean’s Merit Scholarships.

To make a gift, go to the Senior Class Gift online form.

Graduating seniors interested in participating on the Senior Class Gift Committee should go to the IUP Student Philanthropy website to complete the form expressing interest, or e-mail for more information.

If you’ve already made your gift of $20.15 or more, you can pick up your philanthropy cords at 410 Sutton Hall (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.)

Benefactors, Students Celebrate Endowed Scholarships

Logan Feronti, 2015 Patchin and Bartolomucci Scholarship AwardeeRecipients of endowed scholarships at IUP and their benefactors recently celebrated philanthropy at IUP at the Celebration of Endowed Scholarships in the Ed Fry Arena of Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

Nearly 200 students and donors attended the annual dinner.

Logan Feronti (shown in the top photo) and Shawn Mosley (shown in bottom photo) represented student scholarship recipients by providing remarks.

Shawn Mosley, 2015 Serafini Scholarship AwardeeFeronti, a marketing major enrolled in the Cook Honors College, earned the Carl E. Patchin and Donald Bartolomucci scholarships.

“When I was awarded the scholarships, I was extremely honored and thankful. For someone to be so selfless and give up their hard earned money to help me continue to be so successful is truly amazing,” Feronti said. “I honestly cannot begin to thank enough those who not only have contributed toward helping me to earn my degree, but also everyone who has ever donated even the slightest amount to help anyone here.”

Mosley, a mathematics major who earned the Terry Serafini Scholarship, expressed similar sentiment.

“As a recipient of the scholarship Mr. Serafini established, I had the opportunity to have lunch with him. He told those of us at the table that his greatest concern was that his scholarship be awarded to students who work hard. That made me feel so great—that I had earned his scholarship based on my academic merit,” she said. “I thanked him that day, and if he were here this evening, I’d express my appreciation again. I’d tell him that thanks to his investment, the world will someday have a dedicated and well-educated actuary who will make accurate and credible predictions.”

Next year’s celebration takes place Friday, April 22, 2016.

Smash Success! University Family Drive Exceeds Goal

 Permanent link

University Family HeartFor the second year in a row, faculty and staff participation in the University Family Drive has soared past the goal, creating more support for IUP students and momentum for fundraising with alumni and friends.

A total of 796 faculty and staff members supported the Foundation for IUP through the drive. The total is the highest ever, supplying 220 different program and scholarship funds with new support. Of those who participated, 85 were new donors, and 40 different departments and offices reached 100 participation participation. In total, the impact of our community’s generosity has exceeded $211,000.

“I am so happy that so many members of our university family came together to invest in IUP students this year.  Collectively, we are making a real difference for our students. I know they are grateful. I am indebted to our volunteers for all of their efforts—without them, the drive could not be as successful,” said Emily Smeltz, Annual Giving director.

Time to Celebrate: Those who participated are invited to the victory celebration in recognition of donors, volunteers, and the program areas that reached 100 percent participation on Monday, April 13, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Blue Room in John Sutton Hall. President Michael Driscoll will make remarks at 3:00 p.m.

University Family HeartYou asked, we listened!

As the University Family Drive wound down to its last hours on Friday afternoon, the staff in the Office of Annual Giving received numerous email and phone requests for a brief extension.

If you didn’t have a chance to make your gift in support of IUP students last week and still want to do so, please visit the University Family Drive website to download a pledge form or to make an electronic payroll deduction commitment before the close of business on April 8.  You can also make a secure gift online by credit card at*

To all of the faculty and staff members who have already generously lent your support, IUP students say thank you! Donors, volunteers, and departments reaching 100 percent participation will be recognized on April 13 at the Victory Reception hosted by President Michael Driscoll.

Time Is Almost Gone: University Family Drive Ends Today

 Permanent link

University Family HeartThe University Family Drive is drawing to a close. Today is the final day to make your commitment to the Foundation for IUP as a part of the drive. To date, more than 625 IUP faculty and staff have given this year, taking the University Family Drive to 83 percent of its goal of 750 donors. We can achieve our goal, but not without your help!

To our volunteers and to those who have already given, we offer you our most sincere thanks on behalf of the IUP students that will benefit from your generosity.

If you haven’t yet made your gift, here are a few things to consider:

  • Your tax deductible gift will provide direct support to IUP students and will move IUP closer to attaining critical budget-relieving performance funding from the commonwealth.
  • You can support any one of close to 1,000 different funds within the Foundation for IUP. During this year’s drive, gifts have been directed to 215 different department and program funds across campus. Your gift can be directed to any area of importance to you.
  • External constituents that are considering making their own investment in IUP use faculty and staff participation as an indicator of the overall health of the university. Our gifts show those outside of our community that we believe in our students and the great things that are happening here every day; and in-turn, that we are worthy of their support!
  • Each of IUP’s six colleges is employing unique matching opportunities for their faculty and staff members. Regardless of your functional area, the Foundation for IUP will match your commitment to the Sutton Scholarship fund dollar for dollar. While faculty and staff members may give at any time of year, these match opportunities are available only during the University Family Drive.
  • Donors and all departments reaching 100 percent participation will be recognized at the Victory Reception on April 13, hosted by President Michael Driscoll.

Visit the University Family website to download a giving form or make an electronic payroll deduction commitment. You can also make a credit card gift online.

Double Your University Family Gift Today Through Giving Challenge Match

 Permanent link

Double Your Money: IUP Giving Challenge, April 2, 2015University family members have enjoyed the opportunity to have their commitments to the Sutton Scholarship fund doubled by the Foundation for IUP since the drive kicked off on March 2, 2015. Today (April 2) up to midnight, EST, the opportunity to make a match-eligible gift to the fund is extended to those outside of our immediate university community.

If you haven’t yet made your commitment to the University Family Drive, it’s a great day to do so. With only two days left in the drive, you still have time to participate and join the alumni, friends, parents, and students who will make gifts in support of the Sutton Scholarship as part of the Double Your Money Online Giving Challenge*. Visit the challenge website to hear from two students who have benefited from the Sutton Scholarship, and check back often to watch our progress. Today’s goal is to raise $20,000 for the fund. When combined with the match from the Foundation for IUP, that $20,000 will translate into $40,000 for Sutton Scholarship awards. Talk about impact!

If you’ve already supported the Foundation for IUP via the University Family Drive, thank you! You can still be a part of today’s action by sharing the news of our giving challenge with everyone in your IUP network. Together, we can spread awareness and raise meaningful support that will help to educate the next generation’s community leaders and problem solvers!

Don’t forget—your gift to the Foundation for IUP will bring IUP closer to attaining critical performance funding from the Pennsylvania State System. And, if you chose to support the Sutton Scholarship, giving is truly a win-win-win.

If you’d like to support a different program or scholarship fund as a part of the University Family Drive, you can do that, too. Download a form or make your payroll deduction commitment electronically by visiting the University Family Drive website. You can also make a secure credit card gift online.

For assistance, please contact the Office of Annual Giving at 724-357-5555 or
