Greetings from the IUP Kathleen Jones White Writing Center. We’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about our services for Fall, 2025.
The Writing Center is located in Stabley, 203. That’s on the second floor of the Stabley side of the IUP Libraries building. To get there, enter the Libraries through the front doors, then take the stairs or elevator to the second floor. Follow signs to the Writing Center. Please come and check out our space!
Tutoring: Tutoring for the Fall 2025 semester started Tuesday, September 2, 2025. All students at all writing levels are welcome!
Writing Center tutors are here to support you at any stage of your writing process. We can assist with understanding assignments, brainstorming ideas, and organizing thoughts. Tutors offer guidance during drafting and feedback during revision of all kinds of written coursework, including papers, presentations, and speeches. We can even help with proofreading. Our support is flexible and tailored to your needs. Whatever stage you’re at, we are ready to help you move your writing forward!
We offer three types of appointments: in-person, online (synchronous), and e-tutoring (asynchronous). We recommend in-person or online appointments for all students.
Your Writing Center Options: Which One is Right for You?
Starting college means lots of new writing assignments, and we’re here to help! We have three ways you can work with our tutors.
Meet Us In Person
Come to our physical Writing Center. Your tutor can look at your paper with you and point things out as you talk. No fancy tech; just bring your writing-in-progress. Great for when you want to focus without distractions. Perfect if you learn better when you can gesture, draw diagrams, or spread papers out on a table.
Video Chat with Us (Synchronous Online Tutoring)
Jump on a video call with your tutor. It’s kind of like FaceTiming a friend for homework help. You can share your screen so your tutor sees exactly what you’re working on. Ask questions and get answers right away, just like meeting in person. It’s super convenient if you’re stuck in your dorm, at work, or can’t make it to campus. Works great when you need to talk through ideas or get unstuck.
E-Tutoring (Asynchronous Online Tutoring)
Email your draft and get detailed written comments emailed back to you. It’s a good option when your schedule is packed or when you just want to take some time to think through the feedback you receive.
We suggest trying in-person or video sessions first, especially as a first-year student. Here’s why: you can ask, “Wait, what do you mean by that?” right away instead of wondering until you can make another appointment. We can help you brainstorm when you’re stuck or talk through assignment requirements. You’ll learn strategies you can use for future papers, not just fixes for the one you’re writing. It’s way less intimidating than you might think. Remember: writing tutors are students, too, and we’ve all been where you are!
