Today, university officials learned of several incidents of graphic drawings on trees appearing to depict a hanging. While we do not know the motives for the graffiti, the potential impact has already affected members of our university community. As images are discovered, they are being removed.
This unfortunate incident is the most recent among several expressions of intolerance experienced by members of our university community. When students and faculty and staff members experience intolerance, hatred, and/or injustice, it is vital to counter these expressions by reaffirming the value of each individual, exchanging ideas, and listening to one another with consideration and respect.
Members of the university community who are emotionally distressed by the images and/or experiencing intolerance may contact the Counseling Center in the Center for Health and Well-Being at 724-357-2621.
Community members concerned about safety or who may have information regarding the graffiti are urged to contact University Police at 724-357-2141.
