Our community suffered a devastating loss Saturday with the deaths of three Pittsburgh Police officers killed in the line of duty. I am saddened to report that one of the three officers, Officer Stephen J. Mayhle, was an IUP alumnus. Officer Mayhle was a 2002 Criminology Department graduate and a native of Indiana.

He is survived by his wife, Shandra; daughters Jennifer, 6, and Brooklynn, 3; his parents, of Indiana; and many members of his extended family. I have conveyed the deep sympathies of the IUP community to Mrs. Mayhle and her family.

A formal viewing for Officer Mayhle and his fallen comrades will be held Wednesday from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the City County Building in Pittsburgh, and a funeral service for the officers will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

Locally, friends will be received from noon to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana. A private funeral service for family only will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with public internment to follow in Oakland Cemetery in Indiana.

I know that you join me in remembering Officer Mayhle and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
