Under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, the university is required to collect and disclose information about crimes that occur on university-owned or -controlled property. This requirement extends to certain off-campus locations when they are used in connection with university-sponsored student travel.

A  Clery Act Overnight Stay Travel Form must be completed for any university-sponsored off-campus trip that meets all of the following criteria:

  • The trip involves IUP students

  • The trip is controlled or organized by the institution (IUP)

  • The travel supports an educational or institutional objective

  • Students remain at a specific off-campus location for more than one night

Completion of this form ensures the university can accurately assess Clery Act reporting obligations and maintain compliance with federal requirements.

What Does Not Need to Be Registered?

Registration is not required when the university does not control the space, including:

  • Trips where students arrange their own lodging

  • Situations where no written agreement exists for the space used

  • Housing arranged entirely by a host institution (e.g., athletic tournaments)

  • Informal meeting locations without agreements (e.g., cafés used for occasional class meetings)

  • Non-overnight field trips to locations not owned or controlled by the university

  • Host family stays, unless a written agreement grants the university significant control over space in the home
