Notes

Common Hour

  • The Common Hour was passed at the University Senate in 2021. You can review the specific details of the Common Hour.
  • IUP’s Common Hour is held from 11:10 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and impacts the Monday/Wednesday/Friday 50-minute class periods only. Other classes, labs, and studios are excluded.
  • It is strongly recommended that no MWF courses are scheduled during the Common Hour time frame (11:20 a.m.–12:20 p.m.).
  • Classes on MWF can be either 50 minutes or 75 minutes after 3:20 p.m.
  • Evening classes may begin at 5:05 p.m. and run for 2.5 hours plus a break one night per week.
  • Graduate evening and weekend courses may use a flexible schedule.

Guidelines for semester schedule build for Indiana Campus

Department chairs and deans are requested to follow these guidelines when building their class schedules.

  • No more than 60 percent of a department’s course offerings may use a Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday sequence.
  • At least 20 percent of the department’s courses should be scheduled during the first two class periods of the day.
  • At least 20 percent of the department’s courses should be scheduled after 3:00 p.m.
  • Fifteen to 20 percent of all classes (where possible) are recommended to be offered in an online format.
