Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall
The Lively Arts
campus and community is invited by the IUP Department of Music to
observe expert instructor and coach Jan Halmes in a free
masterclass that will feature student vocalists and their accompanists.
A dedicated accompanist since the age of 12, Halmes has studied Art
Song with masters such as Hans Hotter, Elly Amling, Otto Edelmann and
Walter Berry. She also has traveled and performed
extensively in Europe and China as an accompanist for choral groups and
soloists. In a master class, all the students (and often audience
members) watch and listen as the master works with each of the
performers. The student soloist and his/her piano accompanist usually
perform a single piece which they have prepared, and the master will
give them advice, often including anecdotes about the composer,
demonstrations of how to perform certain passages, and corrections of
common errors. The student is then usually expected to
perform the piece again, in light of the master's comments.
