IUP’s Office of Marketing and Communications has released guidelines for using artificial intelligence in marketing and promotional materials.

You can find the AI guidelines on the MarCom website.

The guidelines are intended for faculty, staff, student employees, and campus partners who create promotional content or use IUP-branded templates, logos, photographs, and other university materials.

AI tools can help with brainstorming, writing, editing, and routine production tasks, but they are meant to assist human work, not replace it.

The guidelines outline appropriate uses of the technology while emphasizing that the human component to creativity is critical. Anyone creating marketing or promotional materials is responsible for the final product, and all content must be reviewed and approved by a person before publication.

The guidelines also establish expectations for the use of AI in photography and graphic design. Images should accurately represent real people, places, and events. AI tools may be used for certain production tasks, such as resizing images or adjusting lighting, but should not be used to change the meaning or context of a photograph.

The Office of Marketing and Communications does not support the use of fully AI-generated imagery or graphics for final public use. The guidelines also prohibit creating or altering official IUP logos, wordmarks, and other brand assets using AI, as well as generating images that misrepresent people, events, or places.

All marketing and promotional materials must meet applicable accessibility requirements, including ADA Title II, and comply with copyright, licensing, and privacy requirements.

The guidelines include examples of AI tools, recommendations for appropriate uses, and a checklist to help campus communicators review their work before publication.

If you have any questions about the guidelines, contact the appropriate staff members in the Office of Marketing and Communications.
