Walter’s Work Tools, 1920s
Walter’s Work Tools, 1920s
Many students worked their way through college in the 1920s, but not usually in the coal mines. That’s how Walter Patterson, the 1928 class president and a Penn Relays champion, paid his tuition at Indiana State Teachers College. Harrison Wick, Special Collections librarian and university archivist, shares Walter’s story and his mining tools, donated to IUP by his son, Robert.

Jesse's Painting: The Way It Was, 1950
In 1950, Jesse Hornyak ’53 painted a picture of the goings-on in his dorm room—the top floor of the building now known as Breezedale. About 60 years later, his wife, Marianne Demchak Hornyak ’53, returned the painting, The Way It Was, to the same building, now home to IUP’s alumni center. Jesse Hornyak was an Art Education major who went on to teach art for 35 years at Kish High School in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Sharing the story are Elaine Jacobs Smith ’93, editor of IUP Magazine, and Sara Barnett Lawer ’06, M’08, assistant director of Alumni Relations for Outreach.
