Engineering firm GAI Consultants has hired Bob Hurley ’83, M’84 as its Pennsylvania business
development director. In his new position, he will spearhead strategic growth and continued expansion of GAI’s footprint in Pennsylvania.
Bob brings to GAI more than 30 years of experience with environmental, community, and land use planning in the government and not-for-profit sectors.
As former Allegheny County Economic Development director, he oversaw major growth initiatives that significantly improved the region’s economy, including funding of nearly $2 billion in hospital projects for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
and the Allegheny Health Network; establishing Allegheny Together, a countywide main streets program; the repurposing of hundreds of acres of brownfield sites; and assisting in the development of the region’s airport corridor.
His prior experience also includes working for the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh; the City of Pittsburgh Mayor’s Office as manager of Economic Development; the Montgomery County Pennsylvania Planning Commission; the Centre Regional Planning
Commission in State College; and the Pittsburgh Technology Council where, among other responsibilities, he oversaw the Environmental City and Business Networks.
Currently, Bob serves as a board member and treasurer for the Allegheny County Airport Authority and Urban Innovation21, a public-private partnership that boosts regional economic development through innovation-driven entrepreneurship within the City
He is also a member of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission and has held various other appointed and volunteer positions, including sitting on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Regional Policy Council and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance Partnership-Steering
In addition, Bob is one of the founders of Sustainable Pittsburgh, southwest Pennsylvania’s leading sustainable development advocacy agency.
His IUP master’s and bachelor’s degrees are in geography and regional planning.
