Carolyn Hervey in her room at Elfinwild Church Preschool in Glenshaw
For 38 years, Carolyn Drushel Hervey ’60 has served as director of Elfinwild Church Preschool in Glenshaw. Married to Douglas Hervey since 1961, she had been away from teaching for several years to raise their two children when the church’s pastor
asked her to start a preschool. Carolyn sought help from a friend, Donna Elliott Kunc ’66, and in 1980, they welcomed 20 students into their first class. Donna worked at the preschool for 26 more years, until she and her husband, retired teacher Edward
Kunc ’66, made a second home in Florida. Today, Carolyn and her three co-directors have a staff of 22, and enrollment at the school tops 280. Many of the children are second- and third-generation students.

Carolyn is part of a long
and growing line of teachers. Her mother, Erla, taught at the elementary level, and her daughter, Bethann, teaches at Hampton Township Middle School, even after an illness left her paralyzed from the chest down. Still in high school, Bethann’s daughter
Elizabeth plans to become a math teacher.
