An author, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, and faculty member at the University of Mississippi, Alysia Burton Steele ’97 spoke at IUP in April. In presentations to Journalism classes, she showed the pictures—taken in the wake of Hurricane Katrina—that earned her and her fellow photographers at the Dallas Morning News the 2006 Pulitzer for breaking news.

Before a campus-wide audience, Alysia discussed the making of her 2015 book Delta Jewels: In Search of My Grandmother’s Wisdom, a collection of portraits and profiles of more than 50 African American grandmothers in the Mississippi Delta. Proceeds from the book go to her nonprofit, the Delta Jewels Support Foundation, which promotes the recording of oral histories like those in Delta Jewels.

Alysia is working on a second book about cotton, with stories from plantation owners, field workers, and more.
