At its departmental commencement ceremony in May, IUP’s Hospitality Management Department presented its first Allen Woods Alumni Achievement Award to Michael Caruso ’80, of Murrysville. An eighth-degree black belt, Mike is part of the American Taekwondo Association’s leadership team, and he operates four teaching academies. His honors include winning a national title in 1987 and being inducted into the US Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2001. Mike’s wife, Mary, is a fifth-degree certified instructor, and their sons, Michael and Niccolo, are both fourth-degree black belts. Mike is also an instructor trainer for Human Factors Research Group and a consultant for law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities. The alumni achievement award is named for IUP professor emeritus Allen Woods ’50, now living in North Carolina. Retired faculty members Ron Simkins ’58 and Donna Graham Cauffiel ’66, M’76 were on hand to present the award.
