Michael Smith ’02, M’05 Takes Position in State’s Department of Agriculture

In February, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf appointed Michael Smith ’02, M’05 executive deputy secretary of the state’s Department of Agriculture.

Mike served with former Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff in the department’s Communications Office and continued as communications manager in Governor Ed Rendell’s Press Office, managing several agencies including the Department of Agriculture. He also directed communications at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Most recently, he was deputy chief of staff at the Pennsylvania Treasury. A Blairsville-area native, he graduated with a bachelor of science in marketing and master of arts in public affairs from IUP and is now pursuing a doctorate in public administration at Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg.

As executive deputy secretary, Mike will manage the day-to-day operations of the department, provide strategic counsel on issues, and coordinate matters involving other state agencies.

He lives in Harrisburg with his wife, Staci, and sons Carter and Braden.
