ITS Standard Configuration

The IT Services Standard Configuration offers its users a state-of-the-art PC and networking environment providing powerful office productivity tools (a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and database), plus network connectivity within an office, between offices, and to the internet.

The ITS standard desktop configuration offers the following software products:

  • Microsoft Windows 10
  • Virus protection - Windows Defender
  • Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook)
  • Web browsers
    • Microsoft Edge
    • Google Chrome
    • Firefox
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Malwarebytes

Other applications are available for install through the Software Center. You can access the Software Center on your computer by searching for it on the Start Menu. The list of applications available is on the Applications tab on the left side in Software Center.

  • Applications available through the Software Center are dependent upon your department.
  • The SAP desktop is available in all versions of Software Center.

Adding software not available in Software Center

Submit your request via ihelp.iup.edu.

Please include the name of the software, version number, web address of the vendor, and the reason for your request. The request will be reviewed, and IT Services will reach out with a decision on the installation.

Adding new software to the Software Center

IT Support Center leadership considers all software requests related to computers that are part of the ITS Standard Configuration. However, there is generally only one supported package for a given function (word processing, web browsing, spreadsheet, etc.) at any given time.  

Adding software for personal use

The IT Support Center has been directed to generally decline such requests for a variety of reasons. Among these are:

  • IT Services staff members are instructed to rebuild computers following a brief number of troubleshooting steps in order to maximize their timeliness in ensuring problems are resolved in a quality, efficient manner. Computers that contain non-standard software are obviously an impediment to the quick rebuild expectation set by the university.

  • The amount of FTE the IT Support Center can devote to non-university support activities is decreasing each year as center personnel are increasingly called upon to more directly support the university's academic mission. By limiting the variety of software packages contained within network computers, it is possible to provide timely, quality support with relatively few staff members.

  • IUP executives have directed the Support Center to use a standard desktop model so that employees have a limited core set of software they use. All administrative desktops look and feel the same, increasing the ability of an employee to be productive if they change jobs or if they are logging in from somewhere other than their personal desktop.

  • Integration between software applications and collaboration among employees both increase when the variety of software packages is limited.
