Derrick AlexThe Office of International Education (OIE) welcomes a new staff member to our office, Derrick Alex, director of International Recruitment and Partnerships.

Alex comes to IUP from Pacific University, Oregon, where he was director of International Recruitment and Admissions for four years. Before that, he served as director of International Admissions for the University of Colorado–Denver and Anschultz Medical Campus for eight years.

Alex offers a wide range of expertise to the OIE, and we look forward to welcoming to IUP more international students and scholars from an even broader range of countries and academic disciplines. Alex will also oversee the International Student and Scholar Services area that involves immigration, programming, events, and advising.

Alex came to the U.S. as an international student from India to pursue his MBA. This personal experience helps him relate and also effectively connect with international students who are interested in pursuing higher education opportunities in the United States.

Please join us in welcoming Derrick, his wife, Preeti, their children Annalise and Aurelian, and their pet dog, Gems, to the IUP community.

Movie Night: “In Bloom”

(Events) Permanent link

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Office of International Education will sponsor the movie In Bloom on Thursday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Stouffer Auditorium.

The movie is directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross. It’s 1992, and Eka and Natia, two 14-year-old best friends, live in a place that seems to be crumbling at the edge. Their homeland, the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, is at war. The fighting in the northern Abkhazia region is far from the capital, Tbilisi, where the girls live, but the conflict pops up frequently in the adult conversations—at least when the grown-ups are not screaming and cursing about other things.

The film premiered at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival, winning the C.I.C.A.E. Prize. The film was selected as the Georgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.
