By the Time We Got to Woodstock follows the story of a young man whose family cabin is overrun by a motley crew of strangers all trying to get to the fabled music festival, through bad weather and worse luck, before it ends.
In August of 1969, six young people meet on the way to the Woodstock Festival, completely unaware that the weekend will change them forever. It starts when five different strangers in need of refuge from the rain happen upon Hank, who’s been left alone to guard his family’s country cabin from the supposed drugged-out criminal hippies invading a small town en masse for a strange music festival. Over the course of the weekend, all of them confront their deepest fears and desires in the midst of the greatest event in modern history that defied all the predictions of a major disaster.
This poignant comedy was selected to be performed after an extensive reading process organized by visiting professor of theatre Joshua Kelly, who will also direct the production. After IUP announced its open submission for unproduced, full-length plays in late October, it received over 430 submissions from several countries, with playwrights ranging in experience from Drama Desk Award nominees and graduates of celebrated programs like Juilliard and Tisch School of the Arts, to hobbyist writers and first-time student playwrights.
Note: This play contains mild adult themes and is recommended for teenage to adult audiences.
