Students from ART 113 3D Design courses, in collaboration with professors Sharon Massey and Sean Derry, are presenting “Intergalactic Petrochemiculture Aerodome” on February 17, 2022. This project was inspired by recent events surrounding the commercialization of outer space, including curiosity about ethics and responsibility as human-made paraphernalia accumulates in orbit and locations such as the moon. This idea was explored in class discussions in relationship to public space here on earth.

Students in 3D Design each created inflatable flora to populate an 18-foot-wide geodesic biodome for a hypothetical colonization of a newly discovered planet. Students chose flora based on medicinal, agricultural, or aesthetic reasons. Visitors are invited to view the “Intergalactic Petrochemiculture Aerodome.” Park for free at the lot in front of the Sculpture/Ceramics entrance, come inside through those doors, and be escorted to the inflated biodome.

This project is part of Derry and Massey’s Local X Change curriculum, in which students and faculty collaborate on public presentations of civically engaged artwork.
