Honors Tracks

IUP offers honors tracks for the following majors.

Honors tracks provide opportunities for advanced study within your major. They provide useful career experience and can be great preparation for graduate school.

Honors tracks are open to all students in these majors; being part of the Cook Honors College is not a requirement.

Accounting, BS

An affordable, well-rounded education at one of the largest and most qualified accounting facilities in western Pennsylvania

Anthropology Honors Program

The honors program is available to anthropology majors with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and 3.25 GPA in anthropology courses

Anthropology, BA

Students gain a strong foundation in the sociocultural, biological, linguistic, and archaeological subdisciplines of anthropology through mentored, active, hands-on learning

Applied Anthropology, Anthropology, BA

Students gain a cross-cultural perspective, learn quantitative and qualitative methodologies and theory, and put their knowledge into action through internships and research

Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, BS

Under the guidance of IUP’s expert faculty, you’ll take classes such as Calculus II, Probability and Statistics for Natural Sciences, Differential Equations, and Introduction to Mathematical Proofs.

The highly selective Eberly Business Honors Program emphasizes highly integrated curricula, independent research, leadership opportunities, and student/faculty interaction.

Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, BS

As a biology major pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the Cell and Molecular Biology track, you’ll learn about the powerful new biochemical and physical techniques in use today as well as current practices in genetics. Among the courses you’ll take are Principles of Biology, Botany, General Zoology, Microbiology, Genetics, Laboratory Methods in Biology and Biotechnology, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Probability and Statistics, and Molecular Biology Topics. You’ll also take a sequence of biochemistry classes and choose from a list of other biology courses.

This program of study focuses on health promotion and disease prevention through community educational services, and it prepares individuals to develop training and implement curriculum focused on better health and educational outcomes.

Community Planning and Development, Regional Planning, BS

IUP’s BS degree in Regional Planning is one of only 16 accredited undergraduate planning degree programs in the United States. In the Community Planning and Development Track, you’ll study the laws, policies, and design concepts of regional planning and community development.

Early Childhood, PreK-4, BSED with Early Admittance Option for Literacy/Reading Specialist Certification, PreK-12

The Early Childhood Bachelor of Science degree program prepares students to be highly qualified, competent, and effective teachers of children in grades PreK-4.

Early Childhood/Special Education, BSEd

The Early Childhood–Special Education bachelor of education degree program prepares students to be highly qualified, competent, and effective teachers of all learners from pre-K through grade 4 and of learners in special education pre-K through grade 8.

Early Childhood/Special Education Urban Track, BSEd

The Early Childhood-Special Education, Urban Track, bachelor of education program prepares students for teaching in urban school districts, especially in low-income communities with high minority enrollments, where the need for highly qualified teachers is often great.

Earth and Space Science Education, BSEd

Learn astronomy, geology, meteorology, and oceanography and expert teaching methods to open young students' eyes to the wonders of the earth, seas, and sky.

Ecology, Conservation, and Environmental Biology, Biology, BS

This track prepares students for pursuing advanced degrees or employment in areas related to ecology and environmental sciences at universities, government, and private companies.

This track is available by departmental permission to Economics and Economics/Pre-Law majors.

In this track, you'll specialize in the business practices relating to current and emerging technologies in energy management.

As a Management major pursuing the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll learn the techniques behind successfully starting a business and keeping it running.

The honors program is open by departmental permission to geography majors with at least a 3.25 GPA in total university coursework and a 3.25 GPA in geography courses.

The coursework satisfies the medical school admission requirements and will prepare you for the MCAT by the end of your junior year.

Pre-Veterinary, Biology, BS

As a biology major pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in the Pre-Veterinary track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll gain the strong educational foundation you’ll need for veterinary school. This program provides students with competencies to plan, implement, and assess recreation and sports programs in a variety of settings, including adapted sport programs, youth leagues, city parks and recreation departments, adventure travel and tourism, and commercial recreation facilities.

The honors program is open by departmental permission to regional planning majors with at least a 3.25 GPA in total university coursework and a 3.25 GPA in regional planning courses.

Sociology Honors Track

The Honors Program is open by departmental permission to declared Sociology majors with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.5 GPA in sociology courses.

Sociology of Disability Services, Sociology, BA

As a Sociology major pursuing the Sociology of Disability Services track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll specialize in understanding the needs of people with disabilities and the ways society can help them meet those challenges.

Sociology, Social Science Education, BSEd

As a social sciences teacher with a concentration in sociology, you will be responsible for teaching students about the origins of social groups and history. With an emphasis on patterns of social organization in modern industrialized societies, you will show them how religious, political, and cultural organizations influence modern culture. In the end, you will give them a perspective of how society really works.

Spanish Honors Program

The Honors Program in Spanish is designed to give especially talented majors in Spanish the chance to explore areas in their study which surpass what is normally studied in the major. In this program, you’ll acquire a greater depth of knowledge.

You will take courses in language designed to develop fluency in both speaking and writing and courses in culture and literature that will give you the background necessary to communicate with Spanish-speaking people. The flexibility offered by the free electives in this major is an advantage for those coordinating a double major.

IUP’s renowned BSEd in Spanish Education K-12 program has been recognized twice nationally by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages as a model program of foreign language teacher preparation.

Teachers who provide special education services need to have an advanced level of teaching ability with specialized expertise in the learning differences of students with a variety of disabilities.
