Sandra Koeppl Barsotti ’87

Sandy Koeppl Barsotti '87Sandra Koeppl Barsotti credits many of her IUP professors, in particular Journalism faculty members Randy Jesick, Pat Heilman, Jim DeGeorge, Craig Swauger, David Truby, and Bob Russell, with having a profound role in her career.

“I’ve met plenty of journalism, communications, and public relations majors from many universities,” Barsotti said, “some of them quite prestigious, but none have been as well trained and knowledgeable as my fellow IUP alumni. To this day, I know that ZIP code stands for Zone Improvement Plan, and I have a copy of the AP Stylebook at my desk. IUP Journalism taught me to write well and to write efficiently, which are two very valuable commodities in the real world.”

Barsotti, daughter of Walter and Alice Koeppl, of Pittsburgh, graduated in 1987 with a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism and a minor in History. She has held positions of increasing responsibility in several firms in marketing and communications, including Sandy Koeppl Communications, where she worked with senior-level executives to create strategies to increase market presence, establish brand recognition, and partner with businesses to solve complex communications issues involving corporate crises, mergers, acquisitions, and cultural change initiatives.

In 2011, Barsotti joined Digital River as the director of Marketing and in 2013 became the director of Demand Generation. In this role, she develops and executes lead multi-touch demand generation programs that leverage both inbound and outbound tactics and partners with product marketing, product management, business development, and sales to develop campaigns that achieve desired results.

For more than eight years, Barsotti has served on the IUP Alumni Association Board of Directors, most recently as president. She also serves on the board of the Foundation for IUP.

“I have loved the time I have spent being a part of the Alumni Association’s board of directors,” Barsotti said. “I’ve seen the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex go from a dream to reality, the rise of the Crimson Hawk, and I’ve had the honor of meeting so many amazing alumni.”

Barsotti said she cannot say enough about her fellow board members, who have taught her a lot in her last eight years of service.

“Working with the university leadership, staff, deans, and students has been an unforgettable experience and one that I will greatly miss when my term ends,” she said.

During the Alumni Association’s annual Distinguished Alumni recognition ceremony, Barsotti will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service for her work on the board.

Reflecting on her attendance during past Distinguished Alumni events, Barsotti said, “Just when I think I’ve met the most outstanding IUP alumni, along comes another class of amazing people! Each year I’m so impressed with the caliber of alumni and the success they’ve achieved.”

Barsotti said she has met entrepreneurs, rocket scientists, business leaders, doctors, and CEOs. “Meeting these people and hearing their stories is just so inspirational.”
