Workshop: Creating Inclusive Spaces

Zoom

Guest speaker, Justin Brown, will be hosting a workshop on Creating Inclusive Spaces for IUP faculty and programming staff from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020. As an IUP alum and a current PASSHE employee, Justin has a unique perspective on what life as an IUP student is like and he is well-versed in virtual DEI trainings – which works perfectly for times of social distancing. Justin has done some great trainings for our students, but we wanted to make sure that faculty and programming staff also had opportunities to engage in conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the classroom and at campus events. This will include classroom dynamics, course/event content, and curriculum. Justin is a dynamic presenter and while this session may seem like a long time to carve out of your schedule, it will be worth it! As Justin likes to say, "We can no longer be the change we want to see, we have to teach the change we want to see." The Zoom link and log-in details will be sent the day before the training. Please RSVP for the training.  Sponsored by the President's Commission on Diversity and Inclusion.  Further information:  mduncan@iup.edu

On October 23 from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., Justin Brown, an IUP alum, will be hosting a workshop on Creating Inclusive Spaces via Zoom for faculty and programming staff.

November, National Native American Heritage Month, offers many opportunities to move past the
one-dimensional representations of Native Americans. Stories told about the first Thanksgiving often perpetuate harmful stereotypes and racism. It is important to set the record straight, acknowledge Native Peoples, debunk myths, and show Native Americans as contemporary people with dynamic thriving cultures who have profoundly impacted our current food system.  Decolonize your Thanksgiving and make it an opportunity to go beyond the harmful “pilgrims and Indians” narrative and focus on common values:  generosity, gratitude, community, and good food.
