Students discussing and reviewing displaysOn April 9, 2025, Indiana University of Pennsylvania welcomed more than 20 high school students from River Valley, United, and Indiana Area School Districts for Education in Action: A Future Teachers’ Exchange, a hands-on experience designed to inspire the next generation of educators.

The event, developed and led by IUP faculty William Schleicher (Special Education), Annah Hill (Special Education), Valerie Long (Mathematics), and Holly Rougeaux (Mathematics), built on the success of an earlier fall initiative by offering students an even deeper look into the teaching profession. These experiences were made possible by the support of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education grant Developing Future Special Educators.

Participants began the day at the university’s Annual Scholar’s Forum, where they observed how college students and faculty conduct and present research and creative projects. High school students then connected with faculty and current IUP education majors to learn about academic programs, course expectations, and how transfer credits work for those coming from other universities or community colleges.

The highlight of the day was The Educators’ Showcase: A Collaborative Conversation, where high school and college students came together to share the impactful projects they’re working on in their schools and communities. Students discussed their interests, classroom experiences, and future goals in education, while IUP students shared insight into teaching, coursework, scholarships, and professional development.

One Indiana Area Senior High School junior shared,

“I learned so much great information preparing me for when I start teaching. Every time Dr. Schleicher plans something for us at IUP, it makes me want to go into teaching even more.”

Another senior added,

“This event was so helpful in answering questions I had about the program and the career. I gained insightful information on the wonderful opportunities available at IUP.”

After a networking lunch with faculty and students in North Dining Hall, attendees closed the day with a debrief session, reflecting on their experiences and taking away concrete next steps toward a career in education.

The event was not only informative but empowering—encouraging high school students to see themselves as future teachers and giving them space to learn, collaborate, and lead.
