Serving Others, Serving Self

A full house was on hand for the third annual President’s Commission on the Status of Women at IUP conference, held May 19, 2010, at the Hadley Union Building.

The theme of the conference was “Serving Others, Serving Self.” Workshops offered during the program were on topics such as nutrition, caring for others of all ages, résumé writing, women and retirement, volunteer opportunities, yoga and stress relief, and natural healing and women’s health issues.

The luncheon keynote presentation was made by Alisa DeStefano, associate director of Financial Aid. DeStefano’s remarks were titled “I’m Too Busy to Rest; Subtitled: Ladies, Put Your Oxygen Masks On First.”

The President’s Commission on the Status of Women at IUP is part of a larger network of such commissions at all fourteen member universities of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. All are charged with examining the status of women at the individual universities, identifying areas that need improvement, recommending solutions for problems, promoting networking, and encouraging leadership among women.
