Community Service in Action

Students Debra Alter and Eric Zarzeczny,  in conjunction with the Office of Service Learning and in partnership with the Central Blood Bank, organized an information session for students on blood donation called “Save a Life 101.”

The program, hosted by the IUP Living-Learning program, drew twenty-five students and resulted in more than fifty blood donors for the January blood drive, IUP’s second largest blood drive ever with Central Blood Bank. The “Save a Life 101” interactive session included an actual chair used during donations, privacy screens, canteen refreshments, and other materials that are used in Central Blood Bank blood drives, including an opportunity to register for the blood drive.

Alter and Zarzeczny, who work as community assistants through the Office of Housing and Residence Life, developed the idea for the program as one of their community assistant outreach events. This is just one of the hundreds of community service outreach events developed annually by IUP students and staff.
