Helwig Hits Grand Slam

Marvin Hamlisch and Florence Helwig

IUP honored award-winning composer, arranger, and conductor Marvin Hamlisch as the seventeenth annual Helwig Distinguished Artist Award recipient for 2009 on October 5.

The Helwig Distinguished Artist Award was created in 1987 by Florence Helwig of Indiana, in honor of her late husband, Wilfred E. Helwig. As part of his visit to IUP, Hamlisch conducted an open rehearsal with the IUP Jazz Ensemble and performed three big-band arrangements with the ensemble for the concert.  Hamlisch is one of only eight living artists in the world to win entertainment’s “grand slam”—an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award.
