New Associate Provost Named

Innocent (Inno) Onwueme

After a national search, Innocent (Inno) Onwueme has been selected as associate provost for academic programs and planning. Onwueme will assume his duties before September 1.

He comes to IUP from Missouri State University, where he has served as professor and associate dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences and as director of the Missouri State Fruit Experimental Station. Prior to his positions at Missouri State, Onwueme held the endowed professorship in Environmental Studies at Wilson College and served as director of the Fulton Center for Sustainable Living. He has also held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Technology in Lae, Papua New Guinea; the European Union Linkage Program and Erosion Research Center; Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands; and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria.

A native of West Africa, Onwueme received his bachelor’s degree in agronomy and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. As an expert in environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and domestication of wild plant species, he is the author of nine books, sixteen book chapters, and more than eighty articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings. In addition to his various academic appointments, Onwueme has served as a United Nations consultant to the governments of Zambia, Indonesia, and Kenya.
